http://www.prestaproducts.com/adminsite/news/Winter Car Care 101For most people, winter means colder temperatures and extreme weather that impacts vehicles differently than any other season. Just as there is different clothing for protection from winter weather, vehicles need different protection and TLC during the winter too. To help with winter weather, here are some great ideas for promoting products and services for winter car care.

Use a durable, protective wax on the exterior. Use our most durable wax for winter: Best Wax offers 90-180 days of protection!

Make sure headlight lenses have sufficient lumen output. ReNuLite® Wipe-On Headlight Lens Restoration Kit (#136057) is effective and much more economical than replacing headlight lenses or having an accident.

When there’s a break from the harsh wet weather, wash the vehicle using a power washer. It helps remove salt, brine, oil, grime, dirt and other contaminants. Be sure to clean the wheels and under the chassis. Apply a wax or glaze again.

Every couple of weeks, clean the interior including protecting the leather, vinyl and plastic surfaces. Odor eliminators and/or foggers can be helpful as the windows are not down as much in the winter months. Radiant™ Waterborne Dressing should be a go-to for interior and exterior detailing. Don’t forget the Leather & Vinyl Cleaner and Odor Eliminator

Be careful when scraping snow and ice from a vehicle as the tools and actions can damage paint and vehicle surfaces. When surface correction is needed, try the Presta® PACE™ Paint Finishing System with your dual-action orbital buffer.

Check tires for tread depth and windshield wipers for aging as these vehicle components are in direct contact with ice and salt, and can wear quicker.

When spring rolls around, take a day to clean and wax the vehicle. Check to see if there has been any damage to the vehicle’s surface from rocks, salt and other winter-weather road debris.

Making Your Best Pitch: Improving Customer Satisfaction IndexWhether you are a technician, service manager, business owner or customer, you will encounter surveys that measure satisfaction with a car care experience. Word-of-mouth marketing is as important as ever with social media being the first stop for new customers to check reviews.

Having a Customer Service Index (CSI) is simply knowing the current level of satisfaction and the opportunity for improving it.

Try to remember that for most people, a vehicle is one of the largest investments after a home, and that a good car care business will act as a partner with customers to protect their investment. Here are a few tips for anyone on improving CSI:
  • Respect the customer's time. Everyone’s time is valuable and no one wants to feel like they’ve wasted time. Develop practices that minimize on-hold times and delays, and speeds up response time. Apologize for delays. Provide updates when delays occur.
  • Present the best value, not the best price. Value is a perceived relationship between the price and the services offered. Consider what you’re charging and any services you can add that will enhance the perceived value
  • Show genuine appreciation for their business. At every interaction, regardless of the invoice, thank them for their time and business.
  • Offer the most personalized experience you can. Keep a customer file so that you can keep track of important information like:
    • Preferred method of contact
    • History of their services
    • If your system is electronic, keep their credit card information on file to make the payment transaction easier and send receipts
    • Mail or email service specials and promotions
  • Keep your promises. Hold up your end of whatever agreement you have with your customers. Discuss estimates before the work is done, return calls/email within 24 hours and if a job takes more time or money, explain why.

Handling Complicated CustomersWe have all been there before. We’re in a store, or some type of retail establishment, and we’re just not happy with the service we’re getting.

Not happy at all.

So we take it out on the employee in front of us or – better yet – ask for the “manager”. Their reaction generally dictates how the rest of the experience is perceived. If they fix the problem, all is well. If not, well …

But let’s flip the script. You encounter “complicated” customers periodically (hopefully not frequently). What’s the best way to deal with them? First, we have to identify them. These individuals can be:
  • Demanding
  • Impatient
  • Angry
  • Intimidating
  • Indecisive
Handling complicated customers might just be the most challenging thing about your job – and that’s saying something. The key thing is to always deal with them professionally. You can only control you and how you respond to them will influence their behavior.

Here are some tips that can help you navigate these troubling waters.

Always Listen First. No matter what they might say, your customer wants someone to listen. Let the customer talk themselves out. By listening, you can build trust, empathy and rapport, and it calms down the difficult person. After they’ve finished, apologize for their unhappiness towards your business – even if you do not feel they have been let down in anyway. Maintain eye contact and show your attentiveness by standing or sitting up straight.

Repeat or Paraphrase What You Hear. Bottom line, this shows you were listening and will make sure that you completely understand where your customer is coming from.

Stay in Control. Never argue with customers when they are angry, displeased or complaining. If you allow a customer to push your buttons and lose control of yourself, you've lost control of the situation. Emotions are contagious, so executing this strategy can be difficult. When you match anger with anger, you could easily burn bridges. Remember, you can lose a good customer if you show boredom, irritation, disdain or displeasure.

Work to Solve the Problem Immediately. Fix the issue as soon as you can. Even if you had nothing to do with creating the problem, never say this to the customer. Get all the facts you can, and then tell the customer how you can help. The main goal is to leave your disgruntled customer feeling satisfied that they have experienced valued customer service.

Don’t Promise What You Can’t Deliver. Many people fall into this trap, but it tends to have the opposite effect. You don’t want to compound a difficult situation by making grand promises and not fulfilling them. That’s the fastest way to make a bad situation worse.

This isn’t a comprehensive list, but these tips can go a long way toward diffusing the wrath of a complicated customer. As long as you can maintain control of the situation, you can create the desired outcome that will not only satisfy your customer but you as well.

PACE™ Paint Finishing System TipsThe PACE™ Paint Finishing System is getting rave reviews and many of you have had the opportunity to see first-hand how great the system is. We recently sat down with Product Specialist Bill Kleines to learn some of his tips and tricks that will help you as well. Here are some questions that you may be asking and Bill’s responses:

How can I tell if the PACE compounds have broken down?
We use two simple tests to check if we’re not sure if the compounds have broken down. First, if the compound looks look wet and nearly clear, then it’s completely broken down. If you’re still not sure:
  • Use your finger to feel if the compound is somewhat thick and gummy or if it feels like butter
  • If the compound is gummy, it hasn’t broken down all the way and more buffing is required
  • If the compound is buttery, you have worked through the abrasive and are ok to wipe off any excess

I live in an extremely dry climate. Should I do something differently when buffing?
In extremely dry climates, you may experience slight dusting of the product. Simply apply your compound to the pad surface and mist the pad with one shot of water. Do the same for the surface of your panel. Run the orbital at the lowest setting and work it slightly back and forth until you feel the foam pad drop or sink down even closer to the panel. Once this has happened, apply two more ¼” drops of product and go about your normal buffing process. Spray ‘N Shine™ would work as a substitute to water as well.

I have trouble getting comfortable on vertical panels.
If you are buffing on the side of a car and are having a hard time controlling the buffer, don’t worry. Many times, just by changing your grip and way of holding the buffer can make all the difference.
  • Turn the buffer horizontal and place your leading hand under the head to provide support and stability
  • This will allow the buffer to fit under the mirrors and door handles with less effort

Do I need to handle the PACE™ Purple Foamed Wool Heavy Cut Pad differently than the others?
It is important to keep the Purple Foamed Wool Heavy Cut Pad as clean as possible and make sure to brush out often. When using it for the first time, brush out the pad using the lowest speed of the orbital. It’s also critical to properly season the pad.
  • Use the standard four ¼” dots
  • Spread at the lowest speed over your working area
  • If you feel you need more product apply two more ¼” inch dots
  • Do not over load the compound on the surface of the pad

Sometimes I need to get right back to work after I’ve cleaned a pad. Is there a trick to using a pad I just cleaned out?
If you need to continue working immediately after washing the pads out in the sink, there are two ways to dry them:
  • If an air hose is available, you can blow the pad out while running the orbital at the lowest setting to ensure the pad is as dry as possible
  • If air isn’t available, spinning it dry in a bucket or sink will work well
While spinning the pad dry, drag a finger on the outside of the pad to speed the process up.

PACE™ Buffing PadsTo get the best results from our PACE™ Paint Finishing System, use our buffing pads specifically designed for each compound.

PACE™ Purple Foamed Wool Heavy Cut Pad. Designed to work on harder clears with PACE Heavy Cut Compound. This foamed wool pad cuts like wool and polishes like foam. It is our most aggressive orbital pad for cutting, but it still finishes to a nice gloss.

PACE™ Grey Foam Heavy Cut Pad. Designed to work on softer clears with PACE Heavy Cut Compound. This hook & loop foam pad has small, open cells that keep the compound near the surface. This pad provides an aggressive cut (up to P1500 sand scratches) but still finishes to a nice gloss.

PACE™ Orange Foam Medium Cut Pad. Designed to work with PACE Medium Cut Compound. This hook & loop foam pad has small, open cells that keep the compound near the surface. This pad provides a medium level cut (up to P2500 sand scratches) but still finishes to a nice gloss.

PACE™ Black Foam Ultimate Polish Pad. Designed to work with PACE Ultimate Polish and PACE Protective Glaze. This pad provides a show car level gloss and can be used for light correction.

Procedures for PACE™ Paint Finishing SystemUsing the new PACE Paint Finishing System is easy. You just have to know how to get started.

Preparation
  • Center the pad on the backing plate
  • Use a 12/3-gauge extension cord to ensure enough power to the machine
  • Be sure to “season” any new pad
    • Shake the PACE compound and apply four ¼” dots to the pad
    • Set the orbital to the lowest speed and spread the compound over the desired working area (no larger than 20” x 20”)
    • Spread the compound at low speed to “season the pad”
Compounding/Polishing
  • If you just finished seasoning your pad you should add two more ¼” dots to the pad
  • If your pad was pre-seasoned, then you probably have enough product and after you have spread the compound at low speed, you can move to the next step
    • Increase speed of the orbital to the highest setting
    • Work compound in a cross hatch pattern with medium pressure
    • Compound will transition from an opaque color to almost clear. This means the abrasives are breaking down while they correct and polish.
  • A good test is to touch the surface and it should have a wet look and feel like butter. If the surface is “grabby” like a paste wax than you need to continue until compound turns clear and buttery.
    • Do not let the compound go dry
  • Applying Ultimate Polish is the same as the Heavy Cut and Medium Cut Compounds except:
    • Once the Ultimate Polish is spread, increase the speed of the orbital to your middle setting
    • Work the compound in a cross-hatch pattern while applying almost zero pressure – just enough to guide the machine
    • Do not let the Ultimate Polish dry
  • To apply the Protective Glaze:
    • The orbital should be set to the lowest setting. Spread in one pass to achieve full coverage
    • Let product dry to a haze. Polish off with a clean, microfiber cloth
    • Entire vehicle may be treated before wiping off
    • For best results, apply on a cool surface and out of direct sunlight

Presta Products Releases the PACE™ Paint Finishing SystemPaint runs, overspray, orange peel and dirt nibs can slow a body shop down. However, just another compound isn’t going to help. An easy-to-use, one-step solution for paint finishing is required.

That’s why Presta Products has introduced the Presta® PACE™ Paint Finishing System, a one-step process that’s easy to use, reduces cycle time, uses less product and eliminates the guess work.

CLICK HERE TO VIEW OUR PACE HOW-TO VIDEO

“For a body shop, speed is critical. You need something that provides a quality finish quickly; something that’s user friendly and won’t leave swirls,” said Mary Kimbro, director of marketing. “Body shops don’t have time to go back and do it again because time is money. PACE cuts through all of that to solve their problems in one step.”

Designed to work with an orbital polisher, PACE allows collision centers to cut P1500 sand scratches and finish without swirls. The great cutting power and polishing action means using less sand paper, saving time and money. Coupled with its ease of use, body shops will see cycle times improve … and that means more cars out the door.

The core of the PACE system is the choice of two compounds, an optional polish and an optional glaze. Each PACE compound has its own unique buffing pad calibrated to work on specific types of sand scratches and clearcoats. All of the products are water based and body shop safe.

PACE™ Heavy Cut Compound is a correcting and polishing compound that removes up to P1500 sand scratches and polishes to a deep gloss in one step.
  • Available in 8-oz. (part #133108), 16-oz. (part #133116) and 32-oz. (part #133132) sizes.
  • For best results on softer clear coats, use with the PACE™ Grey Foam Heavy Cut Pad in either the 6.5” (#890194) or 5.5” (#890190) size. For harder clearcoats, use the PACE™ Purple Foamed Wool Heavy Cut Pad in either the 6.25” (#890197) or 5.25” (#890193) size.

PACE™ Medium Cut Compound is a correcting and polishing compound that removes up to P2500 sand scratches and polishes to a deep gloss in one step.
  • Available in 8-oz. (part #133208), 16-oz. (part #133216) and 32-oz. (part #133232) sizes.
  • For best results, use with the PACE™ Orange Foam Medium Cut Pad in either the 6.5” (#890195) or 5.5” (#890191) size.

PACE™ Ultimate Polish is a finishing polish to be used as a final step after using PACE Heavy Cut Compound or PACE Medium Cut Compound to achieve a deep, show-car-level gloss. It can also be used as a one-step finish for enhancing the appearance of a vehicle where light correction with a deep gloss is desired.
  • Available in 8-oz. (part #133308), 16-oz. (part #133316) and 32-oz. (part #133332) sizes.
  • For best results, use with the PACE™ Black Foam Ultimate Polish Pad in either the 6.5” (#890196) or 5.5” (#890192) size.

PACE™ Protective Glaze is a breathable and durable protective coating that is an ideal last step in the PACE process. This advanced formula goes on easily and wipes off quickly, producing a deep, long-lasting gloss. Protective Glaze not only beautifies and protects freshly painted surfaces, but allows them to fully cure without causing solvent pop. It can also be used to heighten gloss on non-repaired vehicle areas, making it ideal for pre-delivery prep.
  • Available in a 16-oz. (part #133716) size.
  • For best results, use with the PACE™ Black Foam Ultimate Polish Pad in either the 6.5” (#890196) or 5.5” (#890192) size.

Reduce cycle times. Stunning results. Set the PACE.

Cleaning After a Summer Road TripWhether it’s a day trip or a cross-country voyage, summer road trips make a mess of cars, trucks and RVs. Here are a few hints on how to clean the exterior and interior of the vehicles that roll into your shop – after you’re corrected any body damage!

Bug Splats
One of the biggest challenges is dealing with bug splats on the front of your vehicle. To loosen bug splats and make them easier to remove, we recommend spraying surfaces down with Conquest™ Heavy-Duty Cleaner. The detergents in Conquest are paint safe and help break down bug splats. Therefore, when you go over them with your wash mitt, they will wipe away much easier. We also recommend adding an extra coat of wax to forward facing surfaces. The added slickness of the wax will help make future bug splats wipe away easier. Fast Wax® is more than capable of protecting the finish!

Washing
You already know not to wash the vehicle with ordinary dish soap because it will strip away everything on your vehicle’s surface (including any waxes and sealers) leaving it dry and unprotected from sunlight and oxidation. Plus, dish soap also will not rinse as well as car wash soap, which can be counterproductive by leaving a smeared finish.

If you’re going with just a car wash soap, Sudzz™ easily washes away dirt, grease and grime leaving a film-free surface. And Ultra Concentrated Car Wash is a highly foaming formula for easy washing.

If you want some extra protection, Presta’s Wash & Wax powers away dirt and grime, leaving the vehicle with a durable, high-gloss shine.

Headlights
Road grit, dirt and sand can break down the protective coating on your headlight lenses, causing them to dull and yellow when exposed to regular sunlight. This etched surface makes it more difficult for light to escape, and can dramatically reduce the amount of light available for nighttime driving. Presta’s ReNuLite™ Headlight Restoration Kit lets you restore your lights to like-new clarity in just a few steps…Click here to see how it works.

Carpet and Upholstery
Most road trips include coffee, soda, some type of fast food and an occasional mess. Lubri-Suds™ is a carpet and upholstery cleaner that can be used on any fabric surface. This powerful cleaner quickly removes stains from coffee, juice, food dyes, ink and even Kool-Aid®.

Leather and Plastic Surfaces
When it comes to leather, vinyl and plastic surfaces, Presta has several options for restoring like-new appearances. Leather & Vinyl Cleaner has a special penetrating formula cleans all the way down to the pores and leaves surfaces clean and film free.

Leather Conditioner cleans, revives and conditions aged and dried leather surfaces, leaving a semi-gloss finish.

Clean ‘N Shine powers away grease, grime and dirt from leather, vinyl and plastic while restoring a rich, satiny gloss to the surface. In just one step, this ready-to-use formula cleans, beautifies and protects.

Make Cleanup After Buffing Faster and EasierIt’s only natural as you’re working with a buffing pad spinning in excess of 1,200 RPMs that you’re going to sling some product. Even the most experienced detailers can’t avoid it. And, while Presta’s compounds and polishes are designed to minimize dust and sling, there will always be something to clean up. However, you can take a few steps to help minimize your post-buffing cleanup and maximize your results.

Tip 1: Cover the wiper cowl and windshield with masking paper or towels. Even though Presta’s water-based compounds and polishes wipe up easily and (unlike some competitive products) don’t harden to a cement-like paste when dry, taking this step avoids having to wipe out vents, wipe off wiper blades and re-clean the windshield after you’re done buffing the hood.

Tip 2: Keep your buffing pads clean and avoid using them too long. As the pad gets overly saturated with product, you’ll create more and more sling. Clean wool pads regularly with a buffing spur, and be sure to use a brush to rid your foam pads of excess chemicals. Finally, take the time to wash your pads after compounding and polishing.

Tip 3: Use compressed air to blow debris off the car after you buff. If you have the luxury of working in a shop or garage with compressed air, use your compressor to blow any remaining dust and fibers left behind from the buffing pad off the vehicle surface.

Tip 4: Wipe out doorjambs and body seams. Often overlooked, nothing looks more unprofessional than leftover compound caked in the jambs and body seams of a vehicle.

Tip 5: Finish with a coat of wax. You’ve just spent considerable time removing scratches, flaws and bringing up the paint’s gloss. A quick wax will only not make your freshly polished finish really pop, it will help protect the finish and make it last. Fast Wax® is more than capable of protecting the finish! ]]>

Tech Tips: Eliminate Swirl MarksOne of the most common questions from automotive painters is how to get rid of swirl marks – especially on darker vehicles. The following are Presta’s recommendations for successfully eliminating swirl marks.

  1. Always buff clean. Clean your pad often. Use a spur if using wool pads or a brush if using foam pads.
    • Keep the pad surface as clean as possible, void of any foreign contaminants.
    • When you’re done sanding, make sure to clean off the sandpaper grit and clear dust that has been left behind. A good way to do this is with an ultra-soft microfiber towel and Presta’s Spray ‘N Shine™. This prevents paint defects caused by dirt scratching in swirl marks as you buff.
  2. Always buff flat. Buffing on edge will usually create a swirl mark. But there are times when you may find a troublesome spot that needs to be buffed on edge. Try not to come up on too much of an angle and then run over that area again with the pad flat.
  3. Always buff wet. If your pad runs dry you are likely creating swirl marks with the friction of the pad. Presta products are water based so just a quick mist of water or Presta’s Spray ‘N Shine™ will lubricate the pad and extend the use of the Presta buffing product.
  4. Always buff in a cross hatch pattern. Make vertical passes covering each pass 50% and then do the same for horizontal making each pass cover 50% of the last and this will help eliminate swirl marks as it ensures the product has a chance to work on the entire surface area.
  5. Always follow manufactures recommendations. Follow manufacturer’s recommendations on RPMs as well as moving the buffer across the area at the right speed … not too fast, not too slow so the product can work.

One Final Tip: If you have a troublesome finish and still see some slight swirl imperfection in your paint, apply polish again but this time with a wax applicator pad in straight lines from front to back and then remove with an ultra-soft microfiber towel.

Communicate to Improve Customer Expectations“The two words ‘information’ and ‘communication’ are often used interchangeably, but they signify quite different things. Information is giving out; communication is getting through.”
– Sydney J. Harris, journalist

How you communicate with your customers defines the experience they’ll have with you. Positive communication – where you’re sure you’re getting through to them – leads to a positive experience and reputation.

If you’re just giving them information, something could be misunderstood. Once that happens, the customer experience could be less than positive.

Communication begins with first contact. If the customer has never heard of you and was sent to your shop by their insurance company, then you want to take your time with them. Perhaps it’s best to educate your customer on the work you do. If the customer knows what they’re paying for and why, they’ll have a better understanding of how you’ll be helping them. They don’t need all the technical details but an overarching comprehension of everything involved in the repair will help both you and them.

Coming out of that, also tell them how well trained your staff is. Discuss your shop’s qualifications with the customers. Explain the training your techs have gone through to reach this point, and how their expertise will help the customer in the long run.

Now you’ve put a face on your shop. You’re no longer just the company the insurance rep sent them to. You’re an experienced business with a professional staff that stands ready to help the customer through a difficult situation.

Another area where you want clear communication is how long the repair will take. Sometimes you need to wait for a part, or insurance approval. Let the customer know, because this will help them plan around not having their vehicle.

Communication! This is the most important thing you can do throughout the repair because it defines so much of how the customer views your shop. Whether email, texts or yes, even a phone call, if your customer can understand how you’ll help them and knows what stage of the repair you’re in, they’ll feel better.

Staying in contact has never been easier in this day and age, so use it to your advantage. Ask the customer how they would like to be kept informed during the repair and contact them on the timeline and via the method defined by the customer.

Lastly, don’t forget that first impressions are golden. When they return to pick up their finished vehicle, wow them with a nicely detailed car to go home in. Presta Products has everything you need to deliver a clean and freshly polished and detailed vehicle to your customers.

Choosing the Correct Foam PadWhen it comes to selecting the proper pad for cutting and polishing, it’s important to match the aggressiveness of the polish with the aggressiveness of the pad. Get that wrong, and you’ll just waste product and precious time.

Presta’s current foam pad offering looks like this from most to least aggressive:
Different pad sizes can also have an impact on how well the buffer works and how fast you can cover an area. Smaller pads generally offer you more control because they are easier to maneuver in tighter areas. However, they fill up with product faster. Larger pads can cover more surface area in less time, especially when applying a wax which only needs to be spread thin. The downside is that they are slightly less effective when trying to thoroughly work in a polish.

Marketing Mistakes

What’s the first thing you think of when you hear the word “marketing”?

Creative? Advertising? Complicated? Expensive? New Customers?

Creating, implementing and sticking with a marketing plan can increase your visibility and paint you as an expert - especially when the average customer may only need your services every couple of years. There are many ways to successfully go about marketing yourself to your local community so that you stay top of mind with potential and current customers. But there are also many marketing mistakes that are easy traps to fall into.

The following mistakes could ruin your standing within your potential customer base and have a negative impact on your success.

Marketing is an expense, not an investment. If you view marketing as an expense, something to cut when the budgets get tight, then you’re setting up for failure. Marketing is a process that needs consistency or order to work properly. By stopping and starting your marketing endeavors in your area, your business is just lurching forward sporadically, causing you to look unprofessional to your customers.

Avoiding Self Promotion. You could believe you have the best products in the world (FYI, you do!). You could believe that eventually the cream will rise to the top. You would be wrong. Customers won’t learn about you unless you tell them how great you are. It doesn’t have to be over-the-top hype, but if you believe you have a solid organization with solid products, why wouldn’t you want to tell everyone you could? Don’t be afraid to talk about – and promote – yourself!

What’s Social Media? Many view Facebook strictly as a way of catching up with people they went to high school with, and Twitter as a collection of bite-sized random thoughts. That’s unfortunate, because building up a profile on the popular social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram can lead to a good source of traffic, new opportunities and ultimately customers. You can build up your profiles quickly by sharing good content you create and find online. It may take about six to 12 months before your profiles become popular, so be patient. But social media will allow you to interact with customers faster and can position you as a knowledge expert.

Unconnected. The term “networking” might get overused … but it’s still a valuable tool. Meeting new people and building relationships can lead to potential customers and opportunities you never imagined. Not everyone you network with can help you. But they might know someone else who can. Fostering relationships with those in and around your industry can get your name out there. You never know what might happen.

Stay True to You. If your marketing activities deviate from the reputation your brand has already established, you run the risk of confusing, disappointing or angering your customers and prospects. Ensure that all of your marketing stays true to your message and the promise of your brand.

Marketing doesn’t have to be hard or expensive. But you do want to be creative. Pay attention to some of these potential pitfalls and you could grow your business in ways you never imaged.

The Importance of Microfiber Wipe-Out Detailing ClothsRegular towels can leave scratches and swirls while detailing, marks that dull the final finish you worked so hard getting just right. Presta’s Wipe Out Detailing Cloths can help solve that problem because the cloth is so soft it’s non-abrasive and safe to use on even the most delicate painted and plastic surfaces.

Used dry, the Hornet Detailing Cloth will pick up any foreign materials off any surface. Because the microfibers are positively charged, they attract dirt and dust. The cloth is lint-free and can be used to apply and remove polishes, one-step cleaners and protectants.

When used damp, the Detailing Cloth can tackle any job and clean any surface to perfection. Tough surfaces like door jams, step sills, and wheel wells suddenly clean with ease.

These microfiber towels have hundreds of cleaning uses and are beneficial for automobile, motorcycle, marine and R.V. cleaning tasks. Remember, whether you are wiping on or removing Presta Products, use a new Wipe Out Detailing Cloth to prevent extra scratches and swirl marks.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT - Buffing on Today’s ClearsSince the introduction of the basecoat/clearcoat process, the technology of clearcoats has greatly evolved. The latest developments include speed clears that dry and harden very quickly, as well as glamour clears and scratch resistant clears that provide the vehicle with greater gloss and mar resistance. All of these clears offer unique benefits to the technician repairing the vehicle and demand a unique process and products to aid in removing imperfections from the final finish.

Here at Presta, we have worked closely with coatings manufacturers to develop specific compounds, finishes and buffing systems to meet the demands of newer clearcoat technologies. Our compound that works great with the fast drying and harder clearcoats is the
ULTRA 2® STEP MAXCUT™ COMPOUND.

MAXCUT™ is our fastest cutting compound specifically designed to remove P1500 and finer sand scratches on hard or fast-drying production clears! MAXCUT features:
  • Super-hard, diminishing abrasives that cut quickly and produce a high-gloss finish
  • Produces minimal final residue
  • Waterbased for quick and easy clean up
  • Body shop safe: contains no waxes, fillers or silicones
  • VOC compliant

TIP: Use with PRESTA BLACK & WHITE WOOL PAD #890146 at recommended speed 1800 rpm to remove P1500 final sand scratches or WHITE WAFFLE FOAM PAD #890171 at 1400 rpm to remove P3000 final sand scratches.

To Glaze or to Wax?
There’s a Better Question & Solution.

Drop into a blog on this subject and there’s a wide range of commentary and uncertainty from technicians. This is a good indication there’s confusion about what these products do and when to use them. At Presta, we think there’s a better question and we provide an answer that produces show-room quality results!

Question:

What’s the best combination of products that will consistently produce the highest quality shine and protection without causing solvent pop or causing costly rework?

Answer:
Presta recommends the following solution options:

Polish. Glaze. Wax.
  1. Use a polish from the Ultra 2Step® Buffing System like Finishing Polish or Ultra Buffing System like Ultra Polish to produce a clean, swirl-free surface without leaving silicones or waxes.
  2. Use Ultra Complete Glaze™ when you have freshly cured paint and need breathable paint protection for up to 30-days. For additional protection, try Fast Wax® for pre-delivery prep & up to 30-60 days of protection.
  3. For ultimate protection and durability, try Best Wax™ Paint Sealer. Best Wax is a crème wax that produces a deep gloss with long-lasting protection from environmental contaminants and provides 90-180 days of protection.

EXTRA SHINE TIP
Presta makes two great instant detailers for extra shine:

  • Spray ‘N Shine™ is ready-to-use, breathable film that that won’t cause solvent pop.
  • Nano Finishing Spray- is an instant detailer that produces a durable shine that won’t white-out plastic.

Scuff Stuff® Makes Surface Prep SmoothMakes Surface Prep Smooth

Prepping a bumper cover and other surfaces is critical to ensuring proper paint adhesion. Correct surface prep can minimize or eliminate costly, time-consuming rework.

Scuff Stuff® is the ideal paint prep product because it addresses two of the most common complaint areas regarding improper topcoat adhesion:

  1. Bumpers and other plastic surfaces

  2. Blend areas near the repair/repainted area

How Scuff Stuff® Works
Scuff Stuff features three attributes that make it ideal for prepping surfaces for painting:

  • First, Scuff Stuff acts like a cleanser and removes surface contaminants such as waxes, road films and dirt. This is important because those contaminants prevent proper paint adhesion.
  • Second, Scuff Stuff is a water-soluble formula that rinses away without causing sand scratch swelling.
  • Third, Scuff Stuff contains super-fine abrasives that create a consistent surface profile helping coatings spread flatter and bond more securely to treated surfaces.

Scuff Stuff® Works Better
Because Scuff Stuff combines a cleaning and scuffing agent in one, it has superior workability. In side-by-side bumper cover trials, using the same amount of material, Scuff Stuff outperformed the competition by 60%. The technician was able to clean and scuff more than double the surface area with Scuff Stuff vs. the leading competitors.

Scuff Stuff® Demo
Watch this DEMO to learn more about how to use Scuff Stuff and see how Scuff Stuff can save time and costly rework.

Put Your Best Wheel Forward: Improve Customer Satisfaction IndexWhether you are a technician, service manager, business owner or customer, you will encounter surveys that measure satisfaction with a car care experience. Word-of-mouth marketing is as important as ever with social media and internet forums being the first stop for new customers to check reviews.

Respect the customer's time. Everyone’s time is valuable and no one wants to feel like they’ve wasted time. Develop practices that minimize on-hold times and delays, and speeds up response time. Apologize for delays. Provide updates when delays occur.

Present the best value - not the best price. Value is a perceived relationship between the price and the services offered. Consider what you’re charging and services you can add that will enhance the perceived value such as:
  • Detail the interior and exterior of their car including washing, dressing and air fresheners
  • Free tire rotations, fluids top-off, lubricating hinges and don’t forget floor protectors
Show genuine appreciation for their business. At every interaction, regardless of the invoice, thank them for their time and business.

Offer the most personalized experience you can. Keep an electronic or paper customer file so that you can keep track of important information like:
  • Preferred method of contact
  • History of their services
  • If your system is electronic- keep their credit card information on file to make the payment transaction easier and send receipts
  • Mail or email service specials and promotions
Keep your promises. Hold up your end of whatever agreement you have with your customers. Discuss estimates before the work is done, return calls/email within 24 hours and if a job takes more time or money- explain why.

Perfect Pairs
At Presta we want to make your job easier so keep these things in mind when selecting your buffing compounds and products:

We develop and test the components of our buffing system in our facility with technical experts and R&D chemists so products are consistently high-quality and perform as designed.
Example: Ultra 2 Step® MaxCut™ Compound is a new compound designed specifically to remove P1500 and finer sand scratches on hard or fast-drying production clear coats.
We offer complete kits for refinishing after sanding – including compounds, polishes and accessories that will achieve a flawless, swirl-free finish:
We provide buffing guidelines in our catalog to help you understand which products to use together and how to achieve desired results including buffing speed and pad options.
Example: For P1500 final sand scratches use Ultra 2 Step® MaxCut™ Compound with Black & White Wool pad at recommended speed of 1800 rpm.
We color code our product labels so finding the products that work best together. Match the color of the banner near the Presta logo with the color of pad to achieve a flawless finish each time.
Example: The black & white checkered banner behind the Presta logo on the Ultra 2 Step® MaxCut™ Compound matches the black & white wool pad to use with it.

Winter Shipments & Products

For many of us, the winter months bring extreme temperatures which can affect Presta® detailing and refinishing products in varying ways for a couple of reasons:
  • There are a limited amount of insulated trailers for freight companies and times when temperature controlled trailers are not available to ship temperature-sensitive products.

  • Some freight companies will not ship products when freeze warnings are issued, especially when the shipment may arrive over the weekend or sit outside for any length of time.

Our Process
  1. The majority of Presta products are not damaged when frozen and can be used confidently after being thawed.

  2. In order to protect your order and minimize loss of product that is damaged when frozen, Presta may split an order containing products that are sensitive to freeze damage during frigid cold weather until it’s safe to ship.

  3. An order may be split for this reason and Presta will notify a distributor through an Advanced Shipping Notification (ASN) should this occur.

Affected Products

To best understand which products will not ship during frigid cold weather, we have assembled a list of products that should not be allowed to freeze. Click here to see the list. If you don’t see a product listed, it will perform as intended once thawed. If you have questions about this topic, or concerns about an order, please contact your Customer Service Representative.

Winter Car Care 101

For most people, winter means colder temperatures and extreme weather that impacts vehicles differently than any other season. Just as there is different clothing for protection from winter weather, vehicles need different protection and TLC during the winter too. To help with winter weather preparation, Buddy Dunfee, Presta’s Training and Technical Specialist, shares his top tips for winter car care. These are great ideas for promoting products and services, and make appreciated gifts!

Buddy’s Top 10 Tips

  1. At the beginning of the cold weather season, thoroughly clean the interior and exterior of the vehicle.
Bonus Tip: Try the newest wash from Presta- Wash & Wax. Cleans & leaves a durable shine!

  2. Use a durable, protective wax on the exterior.
Bonus Tip: Use our most durable wax to prep for winter. Best Wax offers 90-180 days of protection!

  3. Make sure headlight lenses have sufficient lumen output. Headlight Lens Restoration is effective and much more economical than replacing headlight lenses or having an accident.
Bonus Tip: Presta’s ReNuLite® Professional Headlight Lens Restoration lasts up to 3 year (aerosol kit)!

  4. When there’s a break from the harsh wet weather, wash the vehicle using a power washer. It helps remove salt, brine, oil, grime, dirt and other contaminants. Be sure to clean the wheels and under the chassis.

  5. Apply a wax or glaze again.
Bonus Tip: Try the newest glaze from Presta, Ultra Complete Glaze™ or an old favorite, Fast Wax™.

  6. Every couple of weeks, clean the interior including protecting the leather, vinyl and plastic surfaces. Odor eliminators and/or foggers can be helpful as the windows are not down as much in the winter months.
Bonus Tips: Radiant™ Waterborne Dressing should be a go-to for interior and exterior detailing. Don’t forget the Leather & Vinyl Cleaner and Odor Eliminator!

  7. Be careful when scraping snow and ice from a vehicle as the tools and actions can damage paint and vehicle surfaces.
Bonus Tip: When surface correction is needed, try the Ultra 2 Step® Buffing System featuring a choice of compounds: MaxCut™ Compound, Finishing Polish and Ultra Complete Glaze

  8. Check tires for tread depth and windshield wipers for aging as these vehicle components are in direct contact with ice and salt, and can wear quicker.

  9. When spring rolls around, take a day to really clean and wax the vehicle. Check to see if there has been any damage to the vehicle’s surface from rocks, salt and other winter-weather road debris.

  10. Fall and spring car care is the perfect time for professional refinishing and detailing.

Global Harmonized System: Upcoming Compliance Due Date
Here are some important facts to keep high on your radar:

  1. Presta labels are compliant as are the Materials Safety Data Sheets and the Safety Data Sheets for Presta Car Care Products.

  2. The next GHS due date is important because it applies to distributors. As of December 1, 2015, a distributor cannot sell product with the pre-GHS label. All product sold by a distributor must be GHS compliant.

  3. The next due date for the industry is June 1, 2016. Workplaces must comply with updated labeling on all secondary containers by this date. Presta is ahead of schedule to meet that due date and has many GHS compliant secondary labels already available.

  4. Should you have any questions about this due date and Presta Car Care Products, please contact Miles Clark, Product Manager at miles.clark@prestaproducts.com or 330.777.8308.

Big Ideas for Small Size Offerings
For example: Some refinish professionals use a scuff pad as the current method for surface preparation of bumpers. Professionals using a scuff pad may use this method because it is convenient or they were taught this way, and maybe trying a new tub of product that may (or may not work better) seems like a risky investment. The problem is, like many scuff pad users, they may experience costly rework when adhesion fails in a short amount of time.

The solution: The 2 oz. pouch of Scuff Stuff® Surface Prep is an ideal trial-size for trying a high-performing product that goes 60% further than competitive products and methods, before investing in the 3.0 kg. tub.

Aside from a lower investment to try a new product, the smaller sizes are convenient when you need to purchase product specific to a single job, helping to reduce waste.

Below is a list of all the trial-size products from Presta. Order a few and try before you buy the larger sizes.

Regulatory Changes: Global Harmonized System is here!

All product labeling and safety data sheets (SDS) must be updated into the new GHS format. There are several important dates distributors should know and understand. The following dates are when products must ship with the updated GHS labels, and have the updated SDS sheets available:

• Manufacturers (like Presta) – June 1, 2015
• Distributors – December 1, 2015
• Final use (dealerships, body shops, etc.) – June 1, 2016

One important change to note is that pictograms will replace the HMIS numbering system. The impact for you is that secondary labels will need to be in printed form versus written. Presta will have pre-printed labels available. We will also provide secondary label templates on the Resource Center.

Presta is here to support you with factual information and resources during this transition. Please contact Miles Clark with any questions.

Tech Tip: Get the best possible finish on fresh clear coat, dark colors included!
Eliminating Swirl Marks:

If you follow these steps you will get the best possible finish from your fresh clear coat. YES, even on dark colors! The five most important things in preventing swirl marks when buffing are:

  • Always buff clean. Clean your pad often. Use a spur if using a wool pad or a brush if using a foam pad.
    • Keep the pad surface to be as clean as possible, void of any foreign contaminants.
    • When you’re done sanding make sure to clean off the sanding dust that has been left behind. A good way to do this is with a microfiber towel and Presta’s Spray ‘N Shine™. This prevents paint defects caused by dirt scratching the painted surface as you buff.

  • Always buff flat. Buffing on edge will usually create a swirl mark. At times, you may find a troublesome spot that you need to buff on edge. Try not to come up on too much of an angle and then run over that area again with the pad flat.

  • Always buff wet. If your pad runs dry you are likely creating swirl marks with the friction of the pad. Presta products are water based so just a quick mist of water or Presta’s Spray ‘N Shine will lubricate the pad and extend the use of the Presta buffing product.

  • Always buff in a cross cut pattern. Make vertical passes covering each pass 50% and then do the same for horizontal making each pass cover 50% of the last and this will help eliminate swirl marks as it ensure the product has a chance to work on the entire surface area.

  • Always follow manufactures recommendations. Follow manufacturer’s recommendations on RPMs as well as moving the buffer across the area at the right speed…not too fast, not too slow so the product can work.

One Final Tip: If you have a troublesome finish and still see some slight swirl imperfection in your paint- I suggest applying polish again but this time with a wax applicator pad in straight lines from front to back and then remove with a microfiber towel.

What buffing system is right for me?

Ultra 2 Step® Buffing System

Presta’s newest system, the Ultra 2 Step® Buffing System, was designed for those customers that have cycle time concerns and want a great finish in less time.

  • Ultra 2 Step Compound consists of a non-diminishing abrasive that gives a quick and long lasting cut that, when combined with Presta’s Black/White Wool pad, gives a technician a matched pairing for maximum performance and speed.

  • Ultra 2 Step Polish is a combination of a polish and swirl remover in one, saving a step versus a traditional three step system. When Ultra 2 Step Polish is used with Presta's grey foam waffle pad, technicians can produce deep rich dark colors and glossy reflective light colors without changing products, saving time and money.

Ultra Buffing System

To achieve a show car quality finish, Presta recommends our traditional 3 step Ultra Buffing System. The Ultra Buffing System consists of Ultra Cutting Crème Compound, Ultra Polish, and Swirl Remover

  • Ultra Polish is the next step for continued scratch refinement and gloss enhancement after all scratches have been refined with Ultra Cutting Crème. Ultra Polish is designed and matched to work with both Presta’s Green Wool and Green Foam Pads and can be the final buffing step on many light colored vehicles.

  • But if optimal gloss and reflectivity are desired Ultra Polish should be followed by Swirl Remover on Presta’s Blue Foam pad for a final step.

Both Presta buffing systems are water based and clean-up with ease. Even after hardening, simply rewet the product and wipe away with a microfiber towel. Presta also adds no fillers to its compounds or polishes so what you see is what you get. You will avoid costly rework resulting from dieback.

Clean is Key

Washing the car is an important first step in the refinishing process. Since all car wash products are not created equal, you must consider several factors in choosing a car wash product including:
  • the cleaning ability of the surfactant
  • the amount and lasting power of foam produced
  • the concentration of the formula

CHOICE IS GOOD

Over several years of comprehensive testing and development, Presta car wash products have been designed to handle any job with ease. Presta offers two car wash product options to meet the needs of today's body shops: Ultra Concentrated Car Wash and Sudzz Car Wash . While both provide superior cleaning performance, they are different in three key ways:
  1. The amount of foam they produce
  2. The concentration of their formulas
  3. The overall price

CONSIDERATIONS
  • Ultra Concentrated Car Wash outperforms Sudzz Car Wash in the amount of foam and the concentration categories. Foam is important in a car wash product because it allows the active cleaning ingredients of the formula to cling to the intended area of the vehicle rather than running down the side, allowing the product to cover more surface area and more effectively clean it.

  • Ultra Concentrated Car Wash is highly concentrated. The concentration level refers to how much product is needed to mix with water in order to produce the performance of the car wash solution. It is usually stated as a ratio (i.e 1:128) in which the first number identifies how many parts of the product should be mixed with water.

  • Manufacturers typically concentrate car wash product for convenience in shipping since water is readily available at the point of use. Water weighs a lot and is expensive to ship.

  • Sudzz Car Wash carries a lower overall price. However, when effectiveness and concentration are considered, Ultra Concentrated Car Wash provides the lower cost per use as it produces over three times more car wash solution from the same 5 gallon carboy of concentrate.

FOR EXAMPLE
  • Ultra Concentrated Car Wash is concentrated at a level of 1:400, which means only 1 fl. oz. of product is needed for every 400 fl. oz. of water (approx. 3 gal).

  • So a 5 gal. carboy of Ultra Concentrated Car Wash produces 2,000 gal. of car wash solution!

  • It is more convenient and affordable to transport 5 gal. of concentrate than 2,000 gal. of solution.

  • Sudzz Car Wash, on the other hand, is concentrated at a level of 1:128 and therefore, one 5 gallon carboy of Sudzz Car Wash will produce 640 gallons of car wash solution.

Presta understands that body shops have different approaches to collision repair and conveniently offers two effective and affordable car wash products to meet the varying needs in the market.

Tech Tip: Get the best possible finish on dark colored vehicles Two of the most common questions I hear from automotive painters are how to eliminate dye-back of sanding scratches (especially on dark colors) and how to get rid of swirl marks. I will be offering my recommendations over two articles for successfully eliminating dye-back of sanding scratches and swirl marks. The first is on eliminating dye-back of sanding scratches- read on for hot tips!

Eliminating Dye-back:

  • The majority of buffing compounds on the market are petroleum based or have a significant amount of fillers in them.

    • Buffing an area that has recently been sanded and then using a product with fillers will actually cut out a large percentage of the sanding scratch and fill in the remainder, hiding the scratch but not completely removing it.
    • Over time, the petroleum and filler components shrink from heat, direct sunlight or are washed out of the sanding scratch, thus revealing the sanding scratches that were not completely removed.
    • If you sand out a dirt nib and then apply baby oil (a petroleum based product) on that area, it will look shiny and scratch free until the area is cleaned.

Hot Tip: Presta’s refinishing products are water based with no added fillers or silicones to eliminate the possibility of sanding scratch dye-back. Here’s a complete list:

• Ultra 2 Step® Cutting Compound
• Ultra 2 Step® Finishing Polish
• Ultra Cutting Crème
• Ultra Cutting Crème Light
• Ultra Polish
• Swirl Remover
• Gel Coat Compound
• Super Cut Compound

Good luck and stay tuned for next months article on getting rid of swirl marks!

Make cleanup after buffing faster and easierIt’s only natural that, as you’re working with a buffing pad spinning in excess of 1200 RPMs, you’re going to sling some product. Even the most experienced detailers can’t avoid it. While Presta’s compounds and polishes are designed to minimize dust and sling, there will always be some mess to clean up. However, you can take a few steps to help minimize your post-buffing cleanup and maximize your results.

Tip 1: Cover the wiper cowl and windshield with masking paper or towels. Even though Presta’s water-based compounds and polishes wipe up easily and (unlike some competitive products) don’t harden to a cement-like paste when dry; taking this step avoids having to wipe out vents, wipe off wiper blades and re-clean the windshield after you’re done buffing the hood.

Tip 2: Keep your buffing pads clean. Also, avoid using pads too long. As the pad gets overly saturated with product, you’ll create more and more sling. Clean wool pads regularly with a buffing spur, and be sure to use a brush to rid your foam pads of excess chemical. Finally, take the time to wash your pads after compounding and polishing.

Tip 3: Use compressed air to blow debris off of the car after you buff. If you have the luxury of working in a shop or garage with compressed air, use your compressor to blow any remaining dust and fibers left behind from the buffing pad off of the vehicle surface.

Tip 4: Wipe out doorjambs and body seams. Often overlooked, leftover compound caked in the jambs and body seams of a vehicle can be an issue. Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe excess compound out of seams.

Tip 5: Finish with a coat of breathable wax or glaze. You’ve just spent considerable time removing scratches, flaws and bringing up the paint’s gloss. A quick wax will not only make your freshly polished finish really pop, it will help protect the finish and make it last. Fast Wax helps protect surfaces from minor scratches, dust and other contaminants.

Wheel Cleaning 101

Step 1

Always make sure your cleaner is safe for the type of wheel you are cleaning. Presta's Non-Acid Tire & Wheel Cleaner is safe to use on any wheel and cleans tires and rims at the same time. The blend of powerful degreasing agents, surfactants and solvents attacks the grease, dirt and brake dust, breaking its bond with the rim.

Step 2

Fill a trigger bottle with Non-Acid Tire & Wheel Cleaner and spray the product directly onto wheels and tires. DO NOT USE ON HOT RIMS. Remember to treat one wheel at a time to prevent drying. Leave on for 2-4 minutes for product to work.

Step 3

If the wheel is extremely dirty, some light agitation with a soft bristle brush may be necessary to loosen soils. This will also help remove old dressing that may make your tire look dull.

Step 4

Rinse thoroughly with a strong jet of water. Then move onto the next tire and wheel.

Step 5

Dry the tires and wheels to prevent water spots and make sure all of the dirt and grime is completely removed. We recommend using Terry Cloth Towels (#810044).

Step 6

Once your wheels and tires have been cleaned and dried, you can apply a tire dressing.
Use Presta's Radiant, a non-silicone, ready-to-use dressing specially formulated for body shops. It restores rich colors and gloss to surfaces faded by exposure to sunlight and weathering.

For non-body shop applications, use Presta's All-Weather Dressing. It is a solvent based, ready-to-use silicone dressing for use on all vehicle vinyl, rubber and plastic. It beautifies surfaces and prevents drying, cracking and fading.

Safe for use on paint, Presta Tire & Wheel Cleaner can also be used as a degreaser for the entire surface of the car. It effectively removes silicones, waxes and greases from hard surfaces.

As with any degreaser or wheel cleaner, do not let it dry on the surface you are cleaning. A dwell time of 30 seconds to a minute is enough for the product to do its work.

Tech Tip : Compounding Old PaintIf you work in a body shop in the northeastern part of the US or eastern Canada, you may have been visited by Fern Chapdelaine, one of our Technical Sales Reps. Working out of Manchester, NH, Fern provides technical training and assistance to jobbers and body shops. Fern has 17 years of industry experience, 10 of those years with Presta. If you’ve seen one of his buffing demos, you know Fern always has a few tricks up his sleeve to achieve a flawless finish. We asked Fern to share one of those tips with our newsletter readers. Take it away, Fern.

I often get asked what I would recommend for an easy and simple clean-up on old paint. Old paint is defined as any paint that is more than 30 days out of the paint booth.

My recommendation is Presta’s Ultra Cutting Crème Light used with a yellow wool pad or yellow foam pad. When using the yellow foam pad, I would recommend buffing at 1200-1400 RPM's. When using the yellow wool buffing pad, I recommend buffing at 1400-1600 RPM's. This product is ideally suited to clean-up snow brush marks, automatic car wash whip marks and other light scratches which have not gone all the way through the clear. It also works well on light oxidation.

In a body shop, it is common to repair a hood and fender, a quarter panel, trunk lid, etc. Once repainted and buffed, it looks perfectly new. However, the adjoining panels may appear dull and lifeless. Use Ultra Cutting Crème Light to prepare the entire vehicle to look its best for customer delivery.

Tech Tip - Getting the most out of your Hornet Detailing ClothsReyman Linares, one of our Technical Sales Reps, provides technical training and assistance to jobbers and body shop throughout the southeastern part of the United States. Reyman shares some great tips for getting the most out of your Presta Hornet Wipe Out Detailing Cloths.

Don’t put scratches and swirls back into your finish when detailing by using regular cotton towels to remove compound or polish residue. Cotton towels can be rough and abrasive. Hornet Detailing Cloths are soft, completely non-abrasive and safe to use on even the most delicate painted and plastic surfaces.

Hornet Wipe Out Detailing Cloths can be used wet or dry. When used dry, the positively charged microfibers will attract dirt and dust and pick them up off any surface. When used damp, they can handle cleaning tough exterior jobs like door jambs, step sills and wheels and interior jobs like leather, consoles and instrument panels.

Use a separate Hornet Wipe Out Detailing Cloth for each product in the buffing system to avoid cross contamination. Using the same cloth may transfer small particles of more abrasive products back onto the vehicle’s surface, creating scratches or swirls on your perfect finish.

Remember, whether you are wiping on/off Fast Wax, Spray ‘N Shine, or other Presta Products, use a new Hornet Wipe Out Detailing Cloth to prevent extra scratches and swirl marks.

Benefits of Presta Scuff Stuff®

One of the keys to a good paint job is preparation of the surface so the paint adheres properly. Two important areas of concern for topcoat adhesion are:

• Repair areas where the new paint must be blended into the existing paint

• The painting of plastic bumpers

Using Presta’s Scuff Stuff® will prepare you for your paint job and make sure there is no costly rework needed.

Scuff Stuff® provides exceptional topcoat adhesion on panels to be refinished and blend areas. It also sticks to bumper surfaces and suds when mixed to create a cleaning action that lifts away dust, dirt, mold release agents and nearly anything else that might keep the paint from adhering properly.

This easy-to-use scuffing paste generates an even and consistent scratch pattern when compared to the conventional method of scuffing with a grey scuff pad alone. It stays wet longer, providing longer work times for busy technicians and rinses away easily leaving little or no residue. Scuff Stuff® wicks into scuff pads producing a saturated and lubricated abrasive that, in side-by-side comparison, goes up to 60% farther than competitive products, resulting in considerable material savings.

With its pleasant “Murphy® Oil Soap” fragrance, Scuff Stuff® mixes easily with water and comes in convenient technician friendly sizes like 2 oz. trial size, 32 oz. quarts, and 6.6 lb. buckets for superior ease of application and value.

Scuff Stuff® is one the most versatile and valuable products offered by Presta Products, making it the top performing scuffing paste on the market today.

Tech Tip: Importance of the backing plateHaving the right size backing plate and being able to center it easily and quickly is key to preventing swirl marks and spider webs while buffing. It also saves times and costly rework. This important tech tip comes from Carlos Garcia, Presta’s tech rep in the southeast covering NC, TN, SC, GA, AL, MS, AR and LA.

There are many sizes of backing plates and buffing pads. Carlos says “One of the benefits that Presta offers is the Flexible Foam Backing Plate. This backing plate is the perfect size for all of Presta’s single sided wool and foam pads. And the centering hole makes it extremely easy to properly place the pad on the backing plate with just your finger, the first time, every time!” The flexibility of this backing plate makes maneuvering the buffer easier and helps prevent burning edges. And because the pad is perfectly centered, there is no wobble or pad instability that can mar a perfect finish.

Of Presta's 5 Most Popular Compounds, When Should I Use Which? We are often asked which compound in our line is “the best”. Since each is designed for a somewhat different purpose, the following guide is designed to help you choose the right compound for your needs.

Ultra 2 Step Cutting Compound: Ultra 2 Step Cutting Compound, Presta’s fastest and most efficient cutting compound is formulated to remove P1200 grit and finer sand scratches. This advanced formula is effective on new and aged clear coat paint surfaces over a broad range of buffing speeds. Use with Presta’s black and white wool compounding pad or white foam waffle cutting pad. This compound is part of Presta’s Ultra 2 Step System, a true two-step system. Along with the Ultra 2 Step Finishing Polish, it is the ideal choice for production shops where cycle times and finish restoration to pre-accident condition are equally important.

Ultra Cutting Crème: Presta’s best selling and most versatile compound, Ultra Cutting Crème was developed specifically for automotive clear coat surfaces. Its diminishing abrasives enable the compound to transition from a cutting to a polishing mode resulting in fewer compounding marks and less work in your polishing step. Ultra Cutting Crème removes P1200 grit and finer wet sand scratches from both fresh and aged paint. Use with Presta’s black wool cutting pad. This compound is part of Presta’s Ultra Buffing System, a tried and true workhorse. This traditional three step system provides outstanding gloss and a show car quality finish.

Ultra Cutting Crème Light: Presta’s Ultra Cutting Crème Light is a mildly abrasive compound that removes P2000 grit and finer sand scratches from any painted surface - freshly painted to fully cured. Many detailers use Ultra Cutting Creme Light on areas of the car that need to be polished to match the newly finished section. It also works well to remove car wash scratches and snow brush scratches. Use with Presta’s yellow wool cutting pad.

Super Cut: Super Cut is a very aggressive compound designed to remove P600 grit or finer wet sand scratches from hard surfaces such as gelcoats and some paints. Many high-end boat detailers also use it on granite, Corian® and simulated granite countertops found on larger boats and yachts. Most technicians find Super Cut to be too aggressive for newly painted and clear coat surfaces. However, if you are preparing a show vehicle and have applied multiple layers of clear coat, you may start with P600 grit and use Super Cut to create that orange peel-free, mirror-like finish. Use with Presta’s 100% white wool buffing pad.

Gel Coat Compound: Specially formulated for worn and weathered gelcoat surfaces, Presta’s Gel Coat Compound will remove P800 or finer DA sand scratches and P1000 or finer wet sand scratches. This aggressive compound is the favorite among high-end boat detailers for its quick cut and easy cleanup. Gel Coat Compound would also be the best choice for technicians that prefer starting with P1000 or P1200 in their paint refinishing process. Use with Presta’s 100% white wool buffing pad.

If you have additional questions regarding our compounds (or other products), please send us an email using our contact form.

5000 Grit Sanding – Does it save time?
We decided to put these additional sanding steps to the test. We compared sanding to P1500 and using the Ultra 2 Step Buffing System to a process that involves sanding to P1500, then P3000, and finally 5000 grit followed up with polishing. After extensive research and testing, here’s what we found:

Sanding all the way to 5000 adds additional time to each job going through a shop. On light colored cars, the Ultra 2 Step Buffing System took 25% less time than the alternative process to remove the same scratches and achieve the same final results. On dark colored cars, the Ultra 2 Step Buffing System took 42% less time.

Sanding to 5000 adds costs to each job in the shop. The high grit sandpaper is extremely expensive and can add significant costs to a job, quickly using up material rate allowances.

Using 5000 grit sandpaper can be tricky for an inexperienced technician. It has a tendency to hydroplane, reducing cut efficiency, which leads to additional time and costs to correct.

The Ultra 2 Step Buffing System was designed to simplify the buffing process. This true two-step system is the ideal choice for production shops where cycle time and finish restoration to pre-accident condition are equally important. Contact your local jobber for a demo.

Tech Tip: Getting the most out of your microfiber towelBob Zwisler, Technical Sales Rep in OH, PA, WV, KY, IN and MI, gives us some of his tips on how to prevent fine scratches from developing on your vehicle's finish.

When I’m visiting shops, I often see technicians reusing the same microfiber towel in both the compounding and polishing steps and then wondering why they see fine scratches in the vehicle’s finish.

When you use the same towel for both steps, you’re likely to transfer abrasive residue from the compound to the polished surface and create fine scratches in it during the wiping process. The solution is two towels – one for compounding and one for polishing. Wear an apron with pockets to keep the towels separate or use two different colors of towels to designate their purpose.

A few other tips to keep your microfiber towels (#800135) performing at their best:

When using a microfiber for the first time, remove the tag that identifies country of origin. This little tag can scratch your finished surface.

Do NOT use a fabric softener or self-softening detergent when washing your towels. The oils in these products will clog up the fibers and make them less effective until rewashed.

Waterless Car Wash
By some estimates, the hose and bucket method consumes 80 gallons of water per wash while an automated car wash system will use about 35 gallons per wash. In addition to the initial water consumption, there’s the runoff. The phosphates, brake dust, oil, gasoline and other contaminants on the vehicle’s surface get washed down the drain and this can lead to ground and surface water contamination. Anyone care for a visit from your local EPA representative?

Consider this time and water saving method – the waterless car wash. You’ll need a product that combines powerful cleaning agents, lubricants and polymers to safely and easily clean a vehicle. Spray 'N Shine is the perfect choice for waterless car washing.

Start with a clean microfiber towel and fold it into 8 sections. Spray Spray 'N Shine liberally on a section of the vehicle and wipe clean, turning the towel to a new section often to reduce any possible scratching. Switch to a new towel as one becomes too dirty for further use. Continue spraying and wiping until you’re left with a clean, shiny vehicle.

One condition – this method works best on lightly soiled vehicles. If the vehicle is too dirty or grimy, start with a water rinse to remove major debris before wiping with Spray 'N Shine.

Tech Tip: Cutting Down Time Behind the BufferIf you work in a body shop in the Western part of the US, you may have been visited by Oscar Paz, one of our Technical Sales Reps. Oscar provides technical training and assistance to jobbers and body shops. We asked him to share one of those tips with our newsletter readers.

In my travels up and down the Pacific coast, I run across shops that use a single sanding step with 1000 grit sandpaper and then turn to the compound to do heavy duty scratch removal work.

Both of Presta’s core compounds (Ultra Cutting Crème and Ultra 2 Step Cutting Coumpound) will remove these 1000 grit sand scratches. But you’ll need to increase the buffer speed and apply more pressure to the buffer. I’ve found it typically takes 4 to 6 cross passes (horizontal and vertical) to remove 1000 grit scratches.

Try adding hand sanding with 1500 or 2000 grit sandpaper to your process. If you add this simple, economical step, you can cut back on your buffer speed, thereby reducing the risk of burning through the clear. You can let the weight of the buffer do the work, reducing the fatigue factor, which is especially important on vertical panels. And time savings? It only takes 2 cross passes to remove 2000 grit scratches. You’ll be amazed at how quickly the shine comes up using this process and either Ultra Cutting Crème or Ultra 2 Step Cutting Coumpound. Follow up with Ultra 2 Step Finishing Polish and you’re done!

At one shop I visited, they were working on a 6’ pickup truck bed. Their single sanding step system would have taken them 2 hours to sand, compound and polish. With my extra sanding suggestion, they reduced the completion time to just around an hour.

Less effort for the shop personnel, more productivity for the shop, a flawless finish with Presta Products - everybody wins here!

What's Under Your Paint? How Subtrates Impact Buffing
Most of today’s vehicles are constructed of one of three substrates – fiberglass, steel or aluminum. Each substrate holds or dissipates heat in a slightly different manner and this heat transfer can impact your buffing. Too little heat can cause longer buff times, excessive product use and scratches left behind. Too much heat can cause gumming of the product or burning of the paint. Use the following tips to improve your buffing results.

Fiberglass isn’t really fiberglass anymore. It’s actually a product called SMC (sheet molded compound) that combines chopped glass fibers with a polyester resin (essentially a plastic). Plastic and glass act as insulators and hold heat in the area being buffed. To increase the performance of the compound you’re using when buffing on SMC, consider decreasing the speed of the buffer and using a wool pad. The air between the fibers of the wool pad helps to keep the panel cool by pushing hot air out and pulling cool air in (like the blades of a fan). Also, don’t buff dry. Compounds or polishes act as lubricant and help keep the panel cool while buffing.

Most of today’s vehicles are constructed with high strength or ultra high strength steel. Vehicles of the past were constructed mainly of mild steel which reacted differently when being polished. The carbon content and alloy of the steel can change how it reacts to heat. In general, steel does not dissipate heat as quickly as aluminum but does not hold the heat as long as fiberglass (SMC). To get optimum performance out of your compound, match the speed of the buffer with the type of pad you prefer to use. Again, don’t buff dry.

Aluminum has the fastest heat transfer of the three. The heat will travel quickly through the material; the thicker the material the faster heat will transfer from the buffer contact area. To maintain heat in the buffing area, increase the speed of the buffer and use a foam pad. You may want to buff with slightly less product but be careful not to create pad chatter by using too little product.

Check the back label on each Presta buffing product for directions on recommended RPM for optimal performance. These will vary from product to product but generally range between 1000 RPM and 2200 RPM. This range allows for ambient and other condition changes, substrate differences and personal buffing style.

Matching Factory Orange Peel on Fresh PaintIf you work in a body shop in the southeastern part of the US, you may have been visited by Reyman Linares, one of our Technical Sales Reps. Reyman provides technical training and assistance to jobbers and body shops. We asked him to share one of those tips with our newsletter readers. Take it away, Reyman.

Many vehicle makes and models come from the factory with a textured clear coat finish known in the collision repair industry as “orange peel”. It is the job of the detailer to determine how these vehicles are repaired and what type of finish or texture should be matched to give the vehicle a factory appearance.

Most shop owners, managers and insurance adjusters highly encourage the matching of factory “orange peel” on fresh paint. There are several reasons for this. First, it is the job of the repair facility to return the vehicle to pre-accident condition with no indication that the vehicle was ever repaired. Second, the repaired panels will match the O.E.M. panels giving a better overall look to the vehicle. Lastly, the consumer will generally give a higher satisfaction rating when the repaired area seamlessly blends with the remainder of the car.

Obtaining the orange peel look starts in the spray booth. The painter can vary air pressure at the air control valve or gauge and/or control the amount of material that is applied to the repaired panels. These spray gun variables allow the painter the freedom to match the “orange peel” on different makes and models without changing materials.

Upon completion of the paint job, it’s time to sand and buff out dirt nibs and imperfections, compound and then polish while maintaining the textured finish.

Lightly sanding with a dual action sander using P3000 grit on the complete painted panel will give the detailer the ability to locate dirt nibs and determine the texture of the clear coat.

If wet sanding the panel be sure to dry the sanded panel with a Water Sprite® before moving on to the next step. If dry sanding, simply use a Hornet Wipe Out Cloth to remove excess dust.

At this point, it should be easier to identify the dirt nibs on the panel. Concentrating on just the dirt nibs, wet or dry sand nibs with P1500 using a small sanding block until the nib is level with the rest of the panel.

Begin the buffing process by compounding the complete sanded panel using Ultra 2 Step Cutting Compound and a black & white wool compounding pad, stopping as soon as sand scratches are gone. Ultra 2 Step Cutting Compound is so effective that over-buffing can change the orange peel effect, so be sure to check your work along the way.

Next, polish the panel with Ultra 2 Step Finishing Polish using a grey waffle foam polishing pad.

Wash the vehicle with SudzzTM Car Wash and chamois dry with a Water Sprite®.

Finally, apply a coat of VOC Fast WaxTM to provide a high gloss shine and 30 days of protection.

Following these simple steps will help you achieve a perfect match between the fresh paint on the repaired section of the vehicle and the original factory painted panels.

Removing Leaf Stains from Paint

How do you remove these stains from the paint? At Presta, we believe in using the least aggressive method that achieves the desired result. So start with the steps in order, stopping when you have removed the stain.

Pick leaves off the car by hand. Brushing or blowing them off may scratch the surface. Wash the vehicle with SudzzTM Car Wash to remove any dirt and grime that may be part of the stains.

Use ConquestTM Heavy-Duty Cleaner at a dilution of 1:10. Spray on the spots and stains, let the solution dwell for several minutes and wipe surface with a clean microfiber towel. This step can be repeated if necessary.

If the tannin has gone into the clear, the only option is to remove the stained clear. Use Ultra 2 Step Finishing Polish and a grey waffle foam polishing pad. The mild abrasives in this polish are designed to remove minor surface imperfections while creating a rich, deep gloss.

If the stain remains after polishing, you may need to go the compounding route. If the vehicle has older paint, the clear may be thin. Use a paint gauge to measure the thickness. If less than 90 microns, compounding is not recommended.

If the thickness is sufficient, sand to 2000 grit and use Ultra 2 Step Cutting Compound and a black and white wool compounding pad. Follow with Ultra 2 Step Finishing Polish and a grey waffle foam polishing pad to create the final, perfect finish.

At whatever point in the above steps you have removed the tannin stains, apply VOC Fast WaxTM with a wax applicator pad to provide 30 days of protection from future staining.

Presta in action at The Custom Shop

John’s getting ready for SEMA 2013 with his 1966 Pro-Touring Chevelle “Stroker”, featuring a theme of “performance but budget-minded.” An LS3 408 Stroker motor with a dual quad setup using Holley EFI Terminator throttle bodies and EFI controller will give this ride an old school look with modern performance. A custom front lower air dam, custom hood and an air ride lowering system with adjustable suspension will keep it low and enable it to cut through the air. The interior will be red and black with painted highlights and a Sony audio/video system with TV/DVD throughout. It will be finished with a custom show paint job using Pro-Spray red pearl base, charcoal and silver graphics with black accent stripes.

John uses a wide variety of Presta products. Before painting he uses Scuff Stuff to prepare all panels, but especially those hard-to-reach areas around door locks and under seals and door jambs. Once painting is complete, John turns to the Ultra 2 Step Buffing System. The speed of the Ultra 2 Step Cutting Compound and Ultra 2 Step Finishing Polish saves him time, but he still achieves that flawless, deep gloss show finish that has won John many Best Paint and Best of Show awards. Prior to a show, you’ll find John washing the car with Sudzz Car Wash and then perfecting the shine with Spray ‘N Shine

Tech Tip - 5 Steps to Clean, Streak-Free WindowsSergio Romero, Presta’s Technical Sales Rep providing support to body shops in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana, is often asked about the most effective way to clean windshields and other glass. Sergio relied on his extensive detailing background when he provided his response to us.

“Cleaning glass on vehicles can be extremely challenging. The exteriors are constantly exposed to extreme weather and industrial and organic fallout. The interiors can have smoke film, hand oils, pet saliva and other contaminants. To produce a clean and streak-free finish, I use the two towel method.

  • Start with a white terry cleaning towel and a lint-free polishing towel. Fold each towel in quarters. This makes 8 small cleaning sections in a single towel.
  • On the exterior glass, spray a generous amount of glass cleaner either on the glass or the cleaning towel. Wipe the glass horizontally left to right or right to left. By wiping in a single direction, you won’t smear any dirt or grime back over the clean surface. Next, spray a mist of glass cleaner on either the glass or the polishing cloth. Gently wipe the glass again in the same horizontal pattern. Move to a new section or side of the towel frequently. Make sure to lower the side windows and clean the edge of the glass hidden by the weather stripping.
  • On the interior glass, use the same process as above but this time wipe the glass in a vertical pattern; top to bottom or bottom to top.
  • Stand back and inspect the window, preferably in the sunlight. See a horizontal streak? You’ll know it’s on the outside. Any vertical streaks will be on the inside.”

Caring for your AUTOSCRUB™ Wash Mitt

To prolong the life of your AUTOSCRUB™ Wash Mitt, we recommend the following:

  • Rinse after each use with water or Sudzz Car Wash. When using the polymer side with Spray ‘N Shine as recommended, the polymer coating can become subject to build-up, reducing its effectiveness. A gentle rinsing will remove the build-up and return the polymer to its prior state.
  • Avoid the use of any degreasers with solvents or high pH with the Wash Mitts. These cleaners can damage the polymer coating.
  • Leave your Wash Mitt out in the open so it can air dry between uses.
  • Avoid leaving your mitt in direct sunlight or inside a hot vehicle. Heat can cause the polymer to lose its shape and impact its ability to remove surface contaminants.
  • Do not use on a hot vehicle. Cool the vehicle with a generous spray of water before using.

Summertime Leather Care

Now that we’re in the dead of summer, you’ve probably seen some news reporter show how hot the interior of a car gets by baking cookies on the dashboard. While a nice warm, chocolate chip cookie sounds pretty good right about now, just think of what that heat does to leather interiors.

Day after day of heat can bake any spills and soils into the leather. Compound that with the drying effect of the heat and the leather can become brittle and crack. How can you counteract the impact of heat on leather interiors?

First, remove any spills and soils from the leather with Leather & Vinyl Cleaner. This powerful penetrating formula cleans deep down into the pores to remove any dirt and stains and leaves the leather clean and film-free. Because it does pull oils from the leather, Leather & Vinyl Cleaner should be used as a deep cleaner, not as an everyday cleaner.

Now that the leather is clean, it’s time to condition the leather with a product that is specifically formulated to replace leather’s natural oils. Leather Conditioner contains mink oil and other conditioners that penetrate into the pores to condition and protect the leather. This easy to use, leather-scented cream formula is thin enough to spread freely yet not run off the surface. With its mild cleaning properties, Leather Conditioner can be used daily to maintain a rich, lustrous gleam.

Every Detail is Important at Berserk Custom Paint

Ryan Townsend has been painting cars and studying art for literally his entire life. At the age of 25 he finally picked up an airbrush and now his life is 100% dedicated to this craft. He joined his father, Robin, at his shop, Berserk Custom Paint in Edmond, OK. Ryan blends elements of tattoo style art with graphic design and traditional hot rod art to create his own unique style. You’ll see his work on cars, motorcycles, wall murals, clothing, canvas or sheet metal.

Ryan tried Presta’s 2 Step Buffing System and had this to say:

"I recently started using the Presta 2 Step Buffing System and couldn't be more impressed. As a second generation custom painter, I have over 17 years' experience in both collision and custom paint. I hold my custom paint and airbrush work up to the highest quality possible. Each tiny detail has to be flawless if my name is to be on it, and that doesn't stop with the clear. If your clear coat falls short, then it brings everything down with it no matter how great the artwork or color is. Every detail matters. That is why I put Presta to the test and it has passed with flying colors! I'll put it up against any other product out there. I'll only be using Presta Products from now on!"

Thanks, Ryan and welcome to the Presta family! We look forward to sharing Ryan’s story on his current project – a custom paint job on Toby Keith’s motorcycle - in a future issue.

Buffing products and dry heat

If you live and work in a part of the world that experiences high heat and low humidity (aka dry heat), you already know the impact those conditions have on your body, local crops and roads. But did you know that dry heat can also affect buffing products?

In dry heat conditions, some polishes can dry too quickly, adhere to paint and/or clump up while buffing. This is not necessarily the fault of the product but the result of a combination of high ambient temperatures, low humidity and heat generated by the buffer.

If you experience this problem, try these suggestions:
  • Use less product with each application but apply it more frequently
  • Slow your buffing speed down from 1400 to 1200 rpm and then finish the polishing off at 1000 rpm
  • Use a small amount of Spray ‘N Shine to lubricate the pad and keep the product moist

This problem will abate when the temperatures drop and the humidity increases. In the meantime, use these tips to get you through the dry heat season.

Benefits of Using Gel Coat Compound

Presta's Gel Coat Compound is a hard-working, fast-cutting compound that was designed to remove scratches with a white wool pad. Its great finish, low dusting and ease of use has made it a favorite of our customers, but have they tried it with our Hornet Short Cut Pad (#800131)?

The unique short fibers of the hornet pad combined with heavy cutting Gel Coat Compound removes 1500 grit and finer sand scratches. This pad and product combination leaves such a fine finish that it can be a one step process on light cars. This is a great time saver for those detailers rushing to get vehicles done fast.

This product and pad combo is also the perfect choice for marina and boat refinishers. Its short work time and low surface heating make heavy oxidation removal a snap.

Tech Tip: Rid your paint of contaminants with the AUTOSCRUB™ Wash MittHave you ever taken a really good look at your car’s paint? Even with regular washing and waxing the surface may begin to lack some of its original shine and mirror-like luster. Often the cause of this can be attributed to bonded contaminants.

Bonded contaminants are airborne particles and droplets including: overspray paint, tree sap, industrial fallout, pollution, road grime and plain old dust and dirt. These contaminants often settle on the horizontal surfaces of your vehicle and get further baked into the surface with the heat of the sun.

To test if your car has bonded contaminants on its surface, simply run your clean hand across the surface. If you detect bumps, or the surface feels etched or rough, you probably have some dirt embedded in your vehicle’s finish. If you really want to get a good idea of what’s sticking to your paint, grab a sandwich bag or piece of cellophane and use it to feel the surface. The thin plastic intensifies the effects so you can really feel the imperfections. Be sure to keep the bag or cellophane around so you can feel how slick and smooth the surface feels after treatment with the AUTOSCRUBTM Wash Mitt.

Presta offers both Fine Wash Mitts and Medium Wash Mitts. For light colored vehicles, use the medium AUTOSCRUBTM Wash Mitt. For dark colored vehicles use the Fine AUTOSCRUBTM Wash Mitt.

How to use your AUTOSCRUBTM Wash Mitt:

Step 1: Wash and dry the vehicle to remove all loose dirt and dust using the micro-fiber side of the mitt and SudzzTM Car Wash.

Step 2: Use the polymer side along with Spray 'N ShineTM, as a lubricant, to remove the paint contaminants.

Step 3: Rub, using gentle circles, and add more Spray 'N ShineTM as necessary, to keep the mitt well lubricated.

Step 4: Rinse the mitt with a hose, every quarter section of the vehicle, to remove any dirt from the mitt. The polymer coating works 3 times faster, and lasts four times longer, than traditional clay bars.

Penfound Designs keeps their vehicles in shape with Presta Products

Owner, designer and collector, Barry Penfound, of Penfound Designs has a passion for cars and an eye for style that has earned his projects national attention from all of the most respected shows and publications.

It was called a ‘tiger’ back in the day… a performance icon that forever changed the car world by virtually inventing the term “Muscle Car.” It was the 1964 Pontiac GTO.

This particular GTO hardtop was just barely a survivor with 99,000+ Midwestern miles on the odometer, and while a restoration was considered for the project, a plan evolved to make it a modern muscle car, what a 1964 GTO might look like if General Motors were building it with the technology available today.

Penfound Design has built several ‘concept customs,’ the 1959 Buick ‘Losabre,’ 1964 Cadillac ‘Cambiar,’ and 1963 Impala ‘Sportsroof’ among them, and each uses brand styling cues that resemble possible GM prototypes or showcars. That same approach was taken for Sabertooth, with an accent on performance.

The original engine was still in the car and was rebuilt as a 449 cubic inch, 507HP motor using Barry Grant Industries tri-power and a Richmond Gear five-speed overdrive transmission. Ridetech suspension, Flowmaster exhausts, one-off Boyd Coddington/Penfound Design 20-inch wheels, redline Toyo Proxes 4 tires, Flaming River steering components and SSBC four wheel disc brakes all help complete the image of a modern muscle machine.

More than a dozen major body modifications have been made to Sabertooth, including a one-off engine-turned grill and rear panel, functional hood and side scoops, Corvette C6 door handles, a hood-mounted tachometer and single windshield wiper. Body components from Goodmark Industries, Year One and Classic Industries were part of the build.

The GTO’s paint is a one-off color called PPGTO blue, kept perfect with Presta Products, and the interior by Chuck’s Custom Design, uses four 1968 GTO bucket seats and red, color-keyed original instrument cluster, with a custom steering wheel, flattened red paint on the dashboard and doors and a one-piece headliner.

Sabertooth has been featured in Hot Rod, High Performance Pontiac and Smoke Signals magazines and has won several awards since its introduction in late 2012. It will be attending many major events in 2013.

More photos and information about the Sabertooth GTO and other Penfound Design vehicles can be found at www.penfounddesign.com.

An Interview with John Wargo, The Custom Shop

"I have been painting for about 28 years. I opened my shop in 1988 and since then added on a few guys to work with me; Rich, Jon, and Dennis. Together, we have built some really nice high-end custom cars, trucks and bikes. We have been in 159 magazine features and on 16 magazine covers. We have won the Grand Champion of the ISCA show circuit 2 times, been on Power Block TV, V8TV and have won many other awards over the years."

"I have used Presta for many years. I’ve long been a fan of Scuff Stuff and Pre-Paint Cleaner before I paint. I have been using the Ultra Buffing System over the years and it works great. So when Presta told me about their new product, I said " It will be hard for you to talk me out of using Ultra Cutting Crème, Ultra Polish and Swirl Remover," because I did not think any system could be better than this. I was wrong. The new Ultra 2 Step Buffing system is amazing! The speed of the Cutting Compound and Finishing Polish saves me time, but I still get that killer deep gloss that all show cars strive for. I have used it on everything from guitars, drums and motorcycle tins, to our latest creation, a V10 powered Karman Ghia that was up for the Ridler award in Detroit in March."

"We have tried other brands because, like everyone, you are always looking for the next best thing. But I have always stuck with Presta because I know it works. I will continue to use Presta products on all of my upcoming projects to produce the best quality finished car that we can. With Presta, we plan on adding many more Best Paints and Best of Show trophies to the long list we already have. Please feel free to check out our work at www.customshop.org."

Keeping your buffing pad clean helps maximize performance
First, be sure to choose only water-based products. Water-based products prevent pads from getting too oily. Non-water-based products may cause the pad to become saturated with oil and much tougher to keep clean. NOTE: All Presta Compounds are water based.

A fast and efficient way to keep wool pads clean is a buffing spur. Simply run the pad at a safe speed and drag the spur along the surface. The spur releases dried and caked on polish and fluffs up the wool fibers to make the pad work great again.

For foam pads, a conditioning brush achieves the same results. Simply drag the brush across the surface to release excess compound or polish.

Finally, for the best way to clean any type of pad, we recommend our Universal Pad Washer. This fast, user-friendly devices clean pads in under 30 seconds. You don’t even have to remove the pad from the buffer. Simply place the pad against the special grit guard and give it a few spins. Works with all types of buffers including rotary, orbital and even drills. Ask your local distributor.

One final tip – don’t overuse the pad. It’s just not worth it. You can tell when a pad is past its prime. You will begin to notice that it isn’t cutting properly, and it may begin to sling polish and actually start falling apart. In the long run, the cost of replacing the pad will be outweighed by the time and effort you’ll save switching to a new, fresh pad. Shop for pads.

Ed Hubbs - Professional Painter

Ed Hubbs, owner of Full Blown Kustoms in Eugene, OR, has been in the game of painting and air brushing for 35 years. Over these years he has owned and operated several shops with up to 25 employees. Throughout his career, he has painted for large companies such as Monaco Motor Homes, Country Coach and Bow Tech. You may have seen him on TV shows like Pimp My Ride, American Inventor, ESPN and Speed Channel’s PINKS. His work has also been featured in over 80 magazines.

Ed is no stranger to the show car quality paint jobs that can only be acquired by hours of color sanding and polishing. After using several different polishing systems, Ed chose Presta’s buffing systems to deliver the flawless finish and high gloss shine that characterizes all his work. “I have been using Presta Products for years now and once I started using them I knew that I would never change. I have been in this industry for 35 years now and worked in a lot of shops using every polishing system out there and I am here to tell you I personally feel that there is not a better product on the market. I just recently learned about the Ultra 2 Step System from Presta and, I will be honest, I had my doubts about it being only two steps. Well I was set straight after using it, not once, because I don't believe that would be a true test, but over a month long trial period. It does just what it says. That's right, I have buffed everything from motorcycles to complete cars and I am a believer in the Ultra 2 Step System.”

Ed has taught his airbrushing classes to thousands of students in person and through his subscription based YouTube channel. You can check out Ed’s work on his web site fullblownkustoms.com, his FaceBook page and his YouTube channel. Tips to prepare your boat for the summer season

1. Clean the hull, deck and other flat, non-skid surfaces with Hull & Deck Cleaner.
This non-caustic, aluminum safe cleaner makes quick work of black streaks, scum and water marks and is safe on metal, fiberglass, gel coat and painted surfaces. All you have to do is spray product onto soiled surfaces, let stand for 3-5 minutes and rinse with clean water. For heavy cleaning, wipe or scrub surface prior to rinsing.

2. Wash the entire boat with Presta's Ultra Concentrated Boat Wash.
With the large areas you'll be cleaning, you'll appreciate this super-concentrated 1:400 dilution formula. Apply soap liberally to boat surface using a wash mitt, wash sponge or boat wash brush. Rinse thoroughly. Dry with a chamois or soft clean towel.

3. If your boat's exterior is chalky and oxidized, buff the surface with Presta's Gel Coat Compound.
Specially formulated for gel coat, this water-based compound is the favorite of many high-end boat detailers for its quick cut, easy cleanup and long-lasting finish. Gel Coat Compound works best with Presta's 100% White Wool Buffing Pad. Then, to really make your boat's finish pop, most professional boat detailers recommend going back over the surface with Ultra Polish and a Green Wool Buffing Pad.

4. Protect you boat's surface with Presta's
UV Crème Wax.
Because boats are out in the water and exposed to the elements for long periods of time, we recommend our UV Creme wax because it provides exceptional protections against salt, corrosion and UV rays in an easy on-easy off formula.

5. Polish any metal surfaces on your boat with Presta Metal Polish.
This special anti-corrosive formula prevents staining, rusting, salt corrosion and water spots on your boat’s metal surfaces and shines at the same time. Apply a dab of polish and gently rub surface until desired level of gloss is achieved. Additional applications may be required. Wipe surface with a clean, soft cloth to remove any haze and debris.

6. Clean your vinyl, rubber, plastic and leather with easy-to-use
Vinyl and Plastic Cleaner.
Our powerful mix of detergents penetrates deep into the pores to remove deeply embedded soils for a clean, shiny, film-free surface. Just spray directly on the surface to be cleaned. Wipe surface with a damp cloth or sponge to remove dirt. Dry with a soft cloth to remove cleaner and bring up shine.

7. Protect your newly cleaned vinyl and plastic surfaces with our Vinyl and Plastic Conditioner.
This non-greasy formula beautifies and revives faded and hardened surfaces while helping to protect against future damage from sun exposure. Spray or wipe onto clean, dry surface. Spread over finish and wipe to a high gloss shine with a clean, soft cloth.

8. To finish up, use Presta’s Express Detail to touch up any fingerprints, smudges or dirt.
Keep a bottle on board for quick touch-ups on the go.

9. Finally, clean glass and mirrors with Marine Glass Cleaner.
This powerful, ready-to-use cleaner makes quick work of bird droppings, saltwater residue and other oily films and dries to a spotless, streak-free finish.

Scuff Stuff® Clean-Up

Many areas around the United States have become very strict about water use and sewer outputs from businesses. If you have used Scuff Stuff® in a typical manner (rinsing after scuffing to remove remaining residue), you may be concerned about how water restrictions could impact the use of your favorite scuffing agent. Here’s an alternate way to use Scuff Stuff® that eliminates the typical rinsing instructions.

After scuffing with Scuff Stuff®, take a moistened towel and wipe the residue from the surface. Follow with a dry towel. To insure that the surface is residue free, use Pre-Paint Cleaner. Moisten a clean cloth with Pre-Paint Cleaner and apply to areas to be painted along with adjacent areas. Apply to small areas at a time to prevent drying. Wipe off with a second clean, dry, lint-free cloth.

Don’t let water concerns stop you from prepping bumpers and other parts the fastest, easiest way possible.

Caring for New Clears

Whether your new paint job is the result of a collision repair or custom body work, you want to make sure your freshly painted vehicle receives proper care. Here are some tips:

Washing
  • For the first 30 to 45 days, wash only with a regular automotive car wash like Sudzz or Ultra Concentrated Car Wash. Using a car wash with a wax can interfere with solvent flash. Even though a clear may be hard to the touch, solvents continue to flash for 30 to 45 days. Use of a product with a wax during this time can cause solvent pop (small craters in the surface of the clear that look like tiny holes).
  • Wash & Wax car washes can be safely used after the 45 day period.

Waxing
  • As mentioned above, during the first 30 to 45 days, solvents in the clear continue to escape. Most crème or paste waxes applied during this time can trap solvents. If you want to put a protective finish on your paint, we recommend the use of Fast Wax. This breathable wax will not cause any issues with fresh clears and can be applied as soon as 24 hours after the paint job.
  • Once 30 to 45 days have passed, a longer lasting wax, such as Best Wax, can be applied to create dazzling gloss and provide protection against environmental damage.

Detailing Matte Finishes

Matte clear coat, also known as flat clear coat, started showing up on high end cars several years ago. This low luster finish is increasingly found on more affordable new vehicles and as an accent alongside a high gloss clear. This trend is definitely having an impact in the aftermarket on custom cars and daily drivers.

While the paint system is still a base coat and clear coat, the clear coat contains a flattening agent that creates the matte look. Because the finish isn’t designed to be glossy, it needs special care in the detailing process to restore its rich color and sheen.

There are a couple of important things to note about this special finish. Deep scratches cannot be removed and a new paint job is the only way to fix that problem. Also, once the paint is shined, there’s no way of restoring it back to the matte finish short of a new paint job.

So with those notes in mind, what products can be used in the detailing process?

  • Alcohol-based glass cleaners like Ultra Concentrated Glass Cleaner (#1383) at 1:13 can be used for basic surface clean up without streaking.
  • Automatic car washes are a matte finish’s arch enemy. Hand washing is the only way to go. Use a car wash like Sudzz Car Wash (#1355) to remove road dirt and grime. Avoid any car wash with a wax in it. Rinse the car down before beginning to wash. Gently wash the car in small sections, working from the bottom up and using a back and forth motion.
To avoid putting any scratches in the finish during the washing process, make sure you are using the two bucket system with a Grit Guard in the bottom of the car wash pail.
  • To remove dust and light dirt between washes, use Spray 'N Shine (#1309). Spray on and wipe right back off with a microfiber or terry towel. This quick detailer will enhance the finish without leaving a shine.

Detailing a car with a matte finish is no more difficult than detailing a car with a gloss finish once you have the proper products and techniques.

Caring for Acrylic Enamel Paint

Acrylic Enamel came out in the 1960’s as a paint and clear coat combination not meant to be buffed out. If no activator was added to the paint, it was not buffed on at all and took at least 6 months to dry completely. If activator was added to the paint it took a couple of days to dry and could be buffed on. The general process of spraying acrylic enamel was to lay down 3 to 4 coats.

If you are sanding and buffing acrylic enamel, it is completely different than sanding and buffing on today’s base coat clear coat (BC/CC) paints. When sanding on BC/CC you are only sanding the clear coated surface. When sanding acrylic enamel, you are actually sanding the paint and cutting through the color. Light sanding is recommended on acrylic enamel to minimize the risk of sanding through to the primer. This is even more important when you are wet sanding because the water on the surface becomes the color of the paint making it hard to see the surface you are working on. Once the dirt or orange peel is removed you can begin buffing.

With Presta’s new Ultra 2 Step Buffing System, there is no need to sand with multiple sand paper or abrasive grits. Start and stop at 1500 and get a beautiful finish. Use the 1st step, Cutting Compound over the 1500 grit scratches until you have them totally removed. Then move to the 2nd step, Finishing Polish and bring that paint color to an amazing gloss that will blow you away. Once you have the shine you want, put a coat of Fast Wax on the car and you are ready for the car shows.

Tech Tip: Get better buffing results by slowing down

  1. Buffing at lower speeds allows the products, compounds and polishes to work more effectively at removing sand scratches and imperfections then running the buffer at high speed. The new Presta Ultra 2 Step Buffing System has proved that you can buff to a high gloss, with maximum depth and a swirl-free finish while buffing from a moderate to low speeds.

  2. Lower buffing speeds gives you better control of the buffer, especially with today’s sophisticated vehicle designs that have more delicate edges and beveled surfaces than older models. Newer models have more plastic buffing surfaces that burn easily with high speed buffing.

  3. Foam pads heat up very fast and the higher the speed the higher the risk of paint burns and swirls.

  4. Swirl marks and “holograms” are more notable on dark paints, so it is advisable to buff at lower speeds to minimize swirl marks.

Presta Ultra 2 Step Finishing Polish

The Ultra 2 Step Finishing Polish is Presta's advanced all-in-one polish and swirl remover. It is designed for use on both new and aged clear coat painted surfaces.

Presta's Ultra 2 Step Finishing Polish removes swirls and holograms easily. It utilizes a unique abrasive shape to polish and shine and the advanced lubricants allow for a long working time.

Bringing out a deep gloss is easy with the Ultra 2 Step Finishing Polish. The micro-sized diminishing abrasives create depth of gloss on any color car. The formula contains a diminishing abrasive with a small final grain, removing the tiniest scratches that cause swirls and holograms. This product also stays wet throughout polishing to achieve a swirl-free finish (NOTE: Do not buff to a dry surface).

The water-based formula has no waxes, fillers or silicones. It won't stain cladding or trim on your vehicles. The advanced polymers used in this formula create minimum splatter, making clean up quick and easy.

The best part of using the Ultra 2 Step Finishing Polish is that it will save you time and money. This "All-in-One" polish and swirl remover eliminates one step completely!

Tech Tip: Getting the Best Results with Presta's Spray 'N ShineSergio Romero, Presta's Technical Sales Rep providing support to body shops in the Central MidWest, Texas and Arizona, reports that people often have questions about when to use Spray 'N Shine.

When using a quick detailer like Presta Spray ‘N Shine, it is important to remember what the product is intended for. A quick detailer should NOT replace regular washing and waxing. While Spray ‘N Shine does provide some mild cleaning power, it is truly intended for removing light dust, pollen, smudges and fingerprints.

A good rule of thumb for testing whether you can get away with a quick detailer or should take a step back and wash the car is to find a dust or pollen-covered surface and blow across it. If you can see the dust or pollen move, then you can remove it with a quick detailer.

However, if the dust and dirt has gotten wet from the dew or rain and has bonded to the surface, you should consider re-washing the car. Reason being, once the dirt has bonded to the surface, you’ll likely have to press much harder to remove, making it much more likely that you’ll add micro scratches back into your vehicle’s surface. Remember, when using your quick detailer, your microfiber towel should glide across the vehicle’s surface with little or no pressure applied to the towel.

Technique:

Step 1: Fold your clean microfiber towels into fours – using this technique gives you 8 clean sections to work with and helps evenly distribute the pressure from your hand as you wipe across the vehicle’s surface.

Step 2: Working in small sections: Spray the area with Spray ‘N Shine. Gently wipe the product onto the surface in straight lines using a clean section of your micro fiber towel.

Step 3: Flip and fold your micro fiber towel to a clean section of the towel and gently wipe the product off of the surface to remove dust, pollen and fingerprints.

Step 4: Repeat steps 2 and 3 until the entire vehicle’s surface is treated. Be sure to switch to a new towel each time you run out of clean sections.

Additional Tips and Product Uses:
Note: Spray ‘N Shine makes a great clay bar and/or buffing pad lubricant.
Drying Tip: Spray a little Spray ‘N Shine on your drying towel or chamois to help it glide across the surface as you dry.

Ultra 2 Step Buffing System Testimonials

“I have been using Presta Products for years now and once I started using them I knew that I would never change. I have been in this industry for 35 years now and worked in a lot of shops using every polishing system out there and I am here to tell you I personally feel that there is not a better product on the market. I just recently learned about the 2 Step System from Presta and I will be honest I had my doubts about it being only two steps.

Well I was set straight after using it, not once, because I don't believe that would be a true test, but over a month long trial period. It does just what it says. That's right, I have buffed everything from motor cycles to complete cars and I am a believer in the 2 Step System.”

Importance of a Wipe-Down

Wiping down the sanded or buffed surface before beginning the next phase of buffing is one of the most critical steps to achieve professional results. However, it is the step that is often skipped.

Why should you wipe between steps? At the end of each step, small amounts of residue remain on the surface. That residue contains abrasives that are larger and harder than the finer-grit material in the next step. If those grains of abrasive remain, they will be picked up by your pad and create new scratches and swirls on the surface. You’ll have to work longer and harder removing scratches and swirls that could have been eliminated if the surface was properly prepared between steps.

To avoid extra work and create a better finish, do a quick wipe-down with Spray ‘N Shine or water and a microfiber towel between each phase of the sanding and buffing process. This will remove the abrasive from the previous product and give you a clean surface to start on for the next step.

Try this one simple step to see an improvement in your finish and cut down on your overall buffing time.

Preparing Your Summer Toys for Winter Storage
The most important step in preparing your boat and RV for storage is to make sure it has had a proper wash. Bird droppings and acid rain can etch and destroy the surface of your boat or RV. Use Presta's Ultra Concentrated Car Wash (#1381) to thoroughly wash the entire outer surfaces of your vehicles. This phosphate-free formula is environmentally safe and is designed to remove dirt and grime quickly, easily and thoroughly with a 1:400 dilution rate.

Next, clean any vinyl, plastic or leather surfaces, especially boat seats, thoroughly. We recommend using Presta's Leather & Vinyl Cleaner (#1349) to remove grease, grime and other soils. This powerful penetrating formula cleans down to the pores and leaves the surfaces clean, film-free and shiny. It is important to clean these surfaces to help stop any mold or mildew from forming while in storage.

Next, you want to protect your leather surfaces with Leather Conditioner (#1346). This formula will revive tired, hardened and soiled leather and convert it back to supple beauty. This will also prevent any mold or mildew from forming on your surfaces while in storage.

You should also use Presta's Metal Polish (#1354) on any metal surfaces. This will clean and protect your surfaces from corrosion.

For those of you with carpet and upholstery, Presta recommends using Lubri-Suds All Purpose Shampoo (#1310). Cleaning your carpet and upholstery will help limit the mold and mildew growth over the winter and help keep your boat and RV smelling great!

One of the most important steps on both RVs and boat trailers is to protect the tires. Over the long winter months, tires are susceptible to dry rot. To help prevent dry rot, dress your tires with Presta's All Weather Dressing (1379).

The last thing you want to do before putting your boat and RV in winter storage would be to apply a protective wax. Use Presta's Marine Nano Cleaner Wax (#1668) to restore brilliant gloss and provide protection to weathered fiberglass gel coats. In one single step, these nano agents remove oxidation, contaminants and minor surface imperfections, while depositing a silicone polymer wax that bonds to the surface creating long-lasting shine and protection.

Best Tricks for Removing Heavy Oxidation

Environmental conditions will cause unprotected painted surfaces to oxidize. Below are a few tricks and tips to help you remove and prevent heavy oxidation from your vehicle's painted surfaces.
Left unprotected, your vehicle will start to show signs of heavy oxidation after a year. This type of oxidation is described as a dull, chalky surface on your vehicle's paint. Follow these steps to remove heavy oxidation from your paint:

Find a cool, well-shaded area to wash, buff, polish and wax your vehicle.

It is important to remove all of the dirt from the surface. Use Presta's Sudzz Car Wash (#1355) to clean dirt, grease and grime and leave surfaces clean and film-free.

For heavily oxidized paints, we recommend buffing with Presta's Ultra Cutting Creme (#1319). Use with Presta's Black Wool Compounding Pad (#890140). Apply a 1” dab of Ultra Cutting Crème to a 2’ x 2’ area and spread with the buffing pad. Buff at a speed between 1800-2200 rpm until all of the compound is gone and a glossy finish has been created. For extended work time, mist with Spray ‘N Shine (#1309). Wipe surface with a Presta Micro Fiber Cloth (#800135).

Next, apply Presta's Ultra Polish (#1335) with our Green Wool Light Cutting/Polish Pad (#890143). Apply a 1” dab. Using the buffer, spread evenly over a 2’ x 2’ area. Buff slowly (1200 to 2000 rpm, depending on surface softness) using an air or electric polisher, applying even pressure. Buff front to rear only, allowing Ultra Polish to flash off and create a high-gloss shine. For extended work time, mist with Spray ‘N Shine (#1309).

Presta's Swirl Remover (#1336) will help remove swirls from both fresh and cured paint surfaces while leaving a high-gloss finish. Apply a 1” dab of Swirl Remover to a 2’x 2’ section and spread with Presta's Blue Foam Polish Pad (#890145). Buff at slower speeds (1200 to 1800 rpm) until the product is mostly gone. Wipe surface with a Presta Micro Fiber Cloth (#800135).

Now that you've removed the oxidation, protect your surface to prevent future oxidation. Use Presta's Fast Wax (#1341) for approximately 30 days of protection. Use Spray ‘N Shine (#1309) to keep your vehicle looking great between monthly waxes!

Pad Seasoning
It's important to season a new pad prior to first use. A seasoned pad will help you with the initial cut because the product has been worked into the pad and will eliminate dry buffing, which can cause swirl marks. Dry buffing can cause friction on the painted surface and create unwanted scratches and haze. It can also contribute to causing the pad to heat and burn through the paint.

If you are using a wool pad, the first thing you need to do is spur out your new pad to eliminate the loose fibers in the pad. Then apply the compound or polish to the wool or foam pad in one of the following ways:
  1. Place the product on pad or panel and spread it by hand
  2. Place an "X" on the pad or panel with the product
  3. Place an asterisk design on the pad or panel with the product
  4. Place 3 to 4 nickel to quarter size dots on the pad or panel

Place the pad on the panel with no pressure. Smear product around on panel to allow it to cover the pad. If you apply too much pressure while placing the pad onto the panel it will cause the product to soak in and not spread properly. This procedure causes the product to cover from the center of the pad out to the edge. This provides better contact between the pad and the panel and uses the full surface of the pad.

Tech Tip: What Makes Presta's Scuff Stuff So Special Although new to Presta, Carlos Garcia has many years of experience in the body shop industry. Carlos will be providing technical sales support to body shops in Georgia, North and South Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama. We asked him to provide some insight into a commonly asked question.
.
As Presta’s newest technical sales rep, I have found out that many shops know Presta because of Scuff Stuff. Everybody seems to know that red label! I am often asked to explain what makes Presta’s Scuff Stuff such an outstanding product.

  • Scuff Stuff’s thick foaming action makes it easy to ensure good coverage to quickly and effectively remove wax, road film and soils.

  • Scuff Stuff’s abrasives help create a consistent surface profile in blend areas and on bumpers, improving the quality of your repair. I always suggest using a fine scuffing pad and letting Scuff Stuff do the work for you. Using an aggressive scuff pad could create deep scratches that might lead to scratch swell, so it is best to work with a fine scuffing pad.

  • Scuff Stuff features a nice, fresh scent making it pleasant to use. All these benefits make Scuff Stuff the ideal paint prep product.

CCS vs. Non-CCS Buffing Pads
Regardless of the surface configuration you need to consider a few characteristics of foam pads before you begin buffing. First of all, foam pads will not provide the same degree of cutting performance as a wool pad. Second, foam pads will generate more heat in the buffing process so you will need to reduce the buffer speed. Third, foam pads will provide a much better final surface appearance than a wool pad so they are best suited to final polish or swirl remover stages of your buffing.

No matter what the pad surface configuration, the overall buffing performance of the pad will remain pretty much the same based on the type of foam in the pad. The big difference among the various surface configurations will be in the hop or chatter and heat generated while buffing. Hop or chatter happens due to the friction between the foam surface and the paint. The more the foam pad is in contact with the paint surface the higher the chance of pad chatter/hop. The non-CCS pad has a completely flat surface and the most buffing contact area. It also will have the highest chance of developing chatter or hop. The CCS pad contains small dimples in the pad surface that reduces pad contact area and friction build up as well as provides small reservoirs to hold buffing product while buffing.

As the buffing product dries out on the surface the friction between the pad and the surface will increase causing the pad chatter/hop. You can reduce this by either applying more product or spraying a lubricant like Presta’s Spray ‘N Shine on the pad or paint surface.

Orange Peel
In cases where you are repairing damage to a single panel of a vehicle, you are going to want to match the paint texture on the remainder of the vehicle to make the repair less noticeable. This will be accomplished with minimal sanding - generally only dirt nibs that are in the surface of the clear coat paint.

If you are looking for a mirror-like finish for a perfect car show, you will need to sand out all of the orange peel surface irregularities. This is accomplished by the process called block sanding or color sanding all of the painted surfaces until the orange peel is removed and you have a perfectly flat surface. If your paint is OEM, you need to be aware of the fact that there is roughly only 2-3 mils (.002”-.003”) of clear coat paint on the surface. A human hair is .001”-.003” thick. There is not much clear coat on the surface to work with and you don’t want to sand through the factory clear. If you are doing a restoration, make sure you are laying down enough paint to permit sanding out the orange peel without going through the clear or color coat of paint. The sanding and buffing process could remove as much as 1 mil of paint from the surface during just one sanding step.

In either case, after the surface is sanded, you will need to remove the sanding scratch marks to restore the gloss to the paint. For final sanding of 1200 grit or finer, this can be accomplished using the Presta Ultra Buffing System, consisting of Ultra Cutting Crème, Ultra Polish and Swirl Remover. And when you have that final gloss, make sure you protect it with a good coat of wax like Presta’s Fast Wax. Fast Wax can be applied over 24-hour old clear coat and single stage paints, because its beathable film allows solvents from fresh paint and clears to escape.

Custom Builds
This custom build is an original 1960’s AMF pedal car that isn’t so original anymore. The body, steering wheel and the front wheels are all that are left. The idea of the build was my brain child and the actual fabrication came from my father, Roy. The pedals have been removed and could not be placed back because of all the fun additions to the car. I started by getting rear Go Kart racing slicks donated to me for the build. I painted the front and back rims pewter silver to give the nostalgic look from the drag strips. The front end has a straight bar axel, spring suspension along with custom rolled leaf springs. The rear end has a custom built pumpkin and ladder traction bars along with a drive shaft from front to back. There were a few original body lines that I filled to give the look of a real car. A hole was cut in the hood to allow for the 1:6 scale model of a full blown Ford 427 drag motor to come up through. Brackets were attached to the front to show off the beer can gas tank that gives fuel to this gasser.

I shot the body in primer then racked my brain on how I was going to do the paint scheme to make this look nostalgic and eye catching. I decided to go with an Outrageous Ecstasy Orange Flake over Hunter Orange basecoat. When you walk around the car the flakes change the color of the orange to a yellow and green. I chose to airbrush “Lil’ Big Shot” on the sides because I felt it fit the build to the tee. All the extreme details on the front and back of the car are all airbrush work and not a decal.

To make this piece look the way it does I love using Presta’s Spray ‘N Shine as a quick detailer and Presta’s Fast Wax for quick protection and a fantastic finish. This custom pedal car is going to be on display at the 15th Good-Guys PPG Nationals in Columbus, Ohio in the pedal car competition. The build is also going to be featured in Gasser Magazine in an upcoming issue.

Tech Tip: Getting the most out of your Presta padsIf you work in a body shop in the southeastern part of the US, you may have been visited by Reyman Linares, one of our Technical Sales Reps. Reyman provides technical training and assistance to jobbers and body shops. We asked him to share one of those tips with our newsletter readers. Take it away, Reyman.

I am frequently asked how long our pads should last or how many cars a pad will do. Well, the answer depends on the person using them, his skills, and how well he takes care of the pads. You can certainly extend the life of your pads to multiple vehicles by following some simple tips to maximize performance.

Presta cutting and polishing pads are specifically designed to work with Presta Ultra Buffing System products. It’s important to follow some simple guidelines to get the best results. First, make sure you are using the proper pad for each step: cutting (black wool), polishing (green wool), and swirl removing (blue foam).

Be sure to use the right amount of product

We recommend that you dispense about a 1” dab of cutting crème or polish for working a 2’ x 2’ area. Believe it or not, using too much product will reduce pad life and cause the cutting crème or polish to paste or cake up on the pads.

Take care of the pads

When you are done using your pads, allow product on them to dry. Then spur each to remove the dried cutting crème or polish. Finally, put the pads back into their bags. Keeping pads clean will extend their life.

Know when to replace pads

The simple answer to knowing when to replace your pad is when you are no longer getting a good finish. Old or worn out pads will leave scratches that new pads would more easily remove.

Removing Bush & Pine Tree ScratchesSpring brings new growth to all of the shrubs, bushes and trees that line driveways. Those bushy branches are just waiting to grab your vehicle as you drive by them, leaving fine scratches on your paint.

Light, superficial scratches like these can be easily removed. Most light scratch marks require light abrasion to wear down the area of and around the scratch. Buffing the scratch and polishing the paint can restore the finish.

We recommend using Ultra Cutting Creme Light, #1334, for removing fine scratches from your vehicle. Just follow these few simple steps below to remove your pine tree scratches.

Start with a yellow wool (#890142) or yellow foam (#890136) pad. Apply a 1” dab of Ultra Cutting Crème Light to a 2’ x 2’ area and spread with the buffing pad. Buff at a speed between 1400-1800 rpm. Buff until all of the compound is gone and a glossy finish has been created. If the product dries too quickly, mist with Spray ‘n Shine (#130901). Wipe surface with a Presta Micro Fiber Cloth (#800135).

If there are any swirl marks left behind, use Presta's Swirl Remover, #1336. It is designed to remove swirls from both fresh and cured paint surfaces while leaving a high-gloss finish. We recommend Presta's blue wool pad (#890144) on cured paint.

Just take a look at what Presta can do for you.

Pre-Paint Prep Work
The first step is to remove dirt and debris by washing the vehicle. Presta’s Ultra Concentrated Car Wash (138101 or 138105) provides great economy with its 1:400 dilution rate. Sudzz Car Wash (135501 or 135505) is another hard-working, high suds cleaner at 1:128 dilution.

Once the vehicle is clean, the next step is to strip any waxes and greases from the areas to be painted. If a paint pen like a Uni Posca or Markline Autowriter marker has been used to identify areas of existing damage or for repair, Presta’s Conquest Heavy Duty Cleaner (131101 or 131105) is the perfect choice. It will not harm painted surfaces, is safe to use on aluminum and leaves the surface film and residue-free.

If areas need to be blended in the painting process, Scuff Stuff (131730 or 131732) will clean and abrade the blend areas, especially urethane bumpers. As a final step before painting, Pre-Paint Cleaner (138222 or 138201) reduces static build-up which helps check dirt nibs and minimizes the need to wet sand and buff.

Eliminating Pad Hop
Presta's Spray 'N Shine is a high lubricity spray that primes foam polishing pads. Using a light mist not only prevents dry buffing and works to eliminate pad hop, but it allows the product to spread evenly over the pad surface, resulting in a thin, uniform coat with less product. Spray 'N Shine works best when used with Presta's compounds and polishes.

Instructions

Use Presta's Spray 'N Shine on a fresh, dry pad prior to first use and throughout the buffing process. Hold bottle approximately 8"-12” away. Mist over the face of the pad. Then polish or buff as needed.

Wild Wes Uses Presta Products to Maintain a Flawless Finish Meet Wes Adkins, custom painter extraordinaire. We caught up with Wild Wes at the Cleveland Autorama in early March.

Wes was introduced to his future career early. As a child, he worked alongside his father in his small paint shop crafting show cars and custom builds. By 12, he was painting cars under his father’s guidance and by 18, he was winning awards for his custom paint jobs.

After graduating from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in 1994, Wes started his own painting, pinstriping and lettering business in East Canton, OH. Word of his work began to spread and his skills were sought by custom builders throughout the country. His work on show cars for SEMA convinced him to move to Las Vegas and open Sin City Kustomz. After 3 successful years located at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, he and his crew decided to return home to Ohio to be near family and friends. While the majority of his work is now done in Dover, his attention to detail and pride in his work keep Wes traveling to some of the best customizing shops in the country.

Presta products play a significant role in Wes’ custom paint finishing process. He uses Ultra Polish with a green wool pad followed by Swirl Remover and a blue foam pad to create a flawless finish and add depth of gloss to newly painted hot rods, bikes and custom vehicles.

Preventing Radiant SlingTire sling has been a problem since the invention of the wheel. The centrifugal force exerted by a rotating wheel will throw anything on the tire or wheel, whether it is mud, dirt, snow or tire dressing, off into the air. Once in the air, it is likely to end up on the rocker panels of the car.

Removal of mud, dirt and snow is pretty painless. However, dressings can be another matter. Dressings have been formulated to be safe on automotive painted surfaces. Problems arise when dressings interact with the rubber in the tire. Tires are engineered with oils and protective compounds to protect the rubber from the effects of weather and sun. Tire dressings will have a tendency to leech these oils out of the tire and create a colored residue that, if not properly removed, will sling off of the tire onto the car body or trim. This sling can stain the paint and, if not removed immediately, can cause permanent discoloration on the finish.

There are a couple of ways to prevent and minimize tire dressing sling. First, a good thorough cleaning of the tire with Non-Acid Tire & Wheel Cleaner will help to remove excess dirt and oxidation from the surface of the tire. Second, apply VOC Radiant Dressing with an applicator pad to minimize any excess product on the tire or wheel. If you prefer to use a sprayer to apply the dressing, make sure all excess dressing is wiped off of the tire AND wheel surfaces. Finally, make sure the dressing is dry and there are no puddles of excess dressing in the tread or around the rim before the car is moved.

Preventing Oxidation

Oxidation is a chemical process that happens when oxygen molecules bond with, and change, practically anything. It occurs everywhere oxygen is, whether in the air, water or other chemicals. Environmental conditions like road salt, chemicals, sea air or industrial pollution play a role in accelerating the rate of oxidation.

This is a problem for car owners since the outermost layers of paint (clear coat) are constantly exposed to air and water. Over time, the unprotected finish becomes duller and duller.

One way to preserve the finish on your vehicle and help avoid oxidation is to remove road salt, industrial pollution and other contaminants with frequent washes. Use Presta's Lubri-Suds All-Purpose Shampoo to wash your vehicles. Its unique lubricating and sudsing action lifts away all types of dirt and grime. It is tough enough to remove dirt and dust from auto exteriors yet gentle enough to clean interior carpet and upholstery.

The key to preventing oxidation is to provide a layer of protection between the exposed material and the air. Wax is the protective coating of choice. Presta's VOC Fast Wax is a liquefied paste wax with premium, natural and synthetic ingredients that beautifies and protects both fresh and fully cured finishes. This easy on/easy off formula provides a high glosss shine and up to 60 days of protection.

The parking of the car is also important. Do not park your vehicle in a damp or poorly ventilated area, as the high humidity may cause or accelerate oxidation and corrosion. If you cannot park your vehicle inside, we recommend a vehicle cover.

Sandpaper 101
Are you wet sanding or dry sanding? The type of adhesive used to bond the abrasive to the backing material determines how well the paper will withstand heat from machine sanding or the water in wet sanding. Check the manufacturers’ recommendations for the best sandpaper for your application.

Are you sanding large panels or small intricate areas? If you are sanding small areas, you may want a more flexible paper. The backing designation ranges from the lightest at “A” to the heaviest at “F”. The lighter the backing the more flexible the paper will be.

There is a wide variety of materials used for the abrading grit on the paper. These can include: aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, alumina-zirconia, chromium oxide and ceramic aluminum oxide to name a few. The manufacturer utilizes the best abrasive for the intended use of the sandpaper.

How do you choose the proper grit size sandpaper grade for your job? The lower the grade, the more aggressive the paper is and the more material you’ll remove. The lower the grade, the deeper the scratches left behind will be.

There are different standards that establish grit size and allowable variation. The two most common standards in the United States are CAMI (Coated Abrasive Manufacturers Institute) and the European FEPA (Federation of European Producers of Abrasives) or “P” grade. The following chart gives a comparison of these two standards for some typical grades used in the paint and body industry.

The uniformity of abrasive particle size will determine the uniformity of the depth of the sand scratch in the paint. The “P” grade paper has typically been classified as a more uniform grit surface due to manufacturers’ tighter specifications on grading their abrasives.

Ford Approves Presta ReNuLite Headlight Restoration System
Ford conducted accelerated weathering tests using their Weather-Ometer chamber. This testing exposed the headlights to sun levels approximating typical conditions in south Florida in August. The testing also included cycles simulating day/night conditions, temperature changes, relative humidity and rain/water/condensation. Testing was completed per Ford specifications and SAE J2527 and J1545 Standards.

After 3,000 hours of testing, the lenses remained clear with no yellowing or hazing throughout the testing. Three thousand hours of this testing equates to roughly 3 years in actual driving conditions.

Presta is the only manufacturer of headlight restoration products to have received this prestigious approval from Ford.

Creating a Flawless Finish with Presta Products
There are two common flaws that occur when a car is painted. See diagram A. The first is dirt nibs. This can be caused by many factors but is most likely due to airborne dust that sticks to the fresh paint. The second flaw is orange peel. This is a common appearance issue with OEM paint and is not entirely undesirable, unless you are finishing a show car.

A.

To properly remove the dirt nibs or orange peel, you must use sandpaper. The amount of the flaw will determine the aggressiveness of the sanding process that will be needed. In most cases, 1200 grit paper will be sufficient to eliminate the flaw. For finer flaws, a 2000 or 3000 grit paper can be used. The finer the sand scratch the less aggressive the buffing process needs to be. See diagram B.

B.

The final sanding step will determine which Presta products to use to create your flawless finish. If you are left with 1200 to 1500 sand scratches, use Ultra Cutting Crème (part number 1319) to remove those scratches and create a rich, deep gloss. Then, to further reduce imperfections, use Ultra Polish (part number 1335). For most cars, this will bring the paint to a flawless finish. For some brands of paints or paint colors (especially black) you may need one final step. In this step, you will remove any remaining swirl marks with Swirl Remover (part number 1336).

For a finish that has been sanded to 2500 or 3000 grit, you can begin the buffing process with Ultra Cutting Crème Light (part number 1334). Follow this step with Swirl Remover for the flawless finish you desire. See diagram C.

C.

The Presta buffing system is designed to physically remove surface imperfections, not hide them. Presta products do not contain waxes, fillers or silicones. Other products with waxes, fillers and silicones hide scratches and other surface imperfections. When these fillers wash or weather off the surface, the scratches will return. See diagram D. With Presta, the finish you get remains true. See diagram E.

D. E.

Once you have achieved a flawless finish using the Presta buffing system, you will need to protect the surface with a good wax coating. Wax will provide the protection from weather, contaminates and the environment to minimize surface degradation.

Protect Your Headlights with Presta's ReNuLite Headlight SealantThere’s a lot of buzz about headlight restoration lately. From middle-of-the-night infomercials to big box stores, it seems everyone is offering some type of product to clear those yellow, cloudy plastic headlights.

The key to effective headlight restoration involves two major steps: first, the complete removal of the failed OEM coating that creates the hazy, dull, discolored appearance; and second, the protection of the headlight lens to prevent UV weathering and a return to the undesirable appearance.

Many of the kits on the market are effective at the first step. A few offer some type of protection, usually through a wipe or wax. Neither of these methods will provide more than a few months of clarity.

Presta’s ReNuLite® Headlight Restoration Kit features a unique aerosol Sealant that, when used in conjunction with the kit process, provides long-term UV protection, superior scratch resistance and a brilliant finish. Testing by Ford Motor Company shows headlights treated with ReNuLite sealant maintain their like-new appearance for a minimum of 3 years.

Here are some additional reasons why you should restore your headlights with Presta’s ReNuLite Sealant:
  • ReNuLite restores OEM quality. ReNuLite's fully cross-linked polymer is designed after the original factory hardcoat, providing similar weathering protection as well as scratch resistance and a brilliant, long-lasting finish.

  • Aerosol application allows the coating to flow out. This flowing process eliminates the streaks left by similar wipe-on applications.

  • UV cure technology significantly decreases repair time. Whether using natural UV light or Presta's low intensity UV Curing Light (#800192) ReNuLite cures in about 10 minutes.

  • Dramatically improves safety. Yellow corroded headlights can decrease headlight intensity by as much as 70%. The ReNuLite process restores headlights to near their original intensity.

Frequently Asked Questions About Caring for Your BoatFrequently Asked Questions About Caring for Your Boat

With the summer season coming to an end, it's time to start preparing your boat for winter storage. It is very important to thoroughly clean the hull, deck and interior of the boat as soon as it is removed from the water. You may have a few questions about how to properly care for your boat so we are here to help you answer them.

Q: How do I restore an oxidized finish on my boat?

A: Oxidation occurs when environmental exposure dries out the surface of the gel coat, causing it to lose both color and gloss. It is necessary to remove all of the oxidized gel coat before lasting high gloss can be restored.

Presta's Gel Coat Compound (#1385) is an aggressive, water-based compound formulated with no fillers, waxes or silicones for a quick cut, easy clean-up and long lasting finish. Gel Coat Compound works best with Presta's 100% White Wool Buffing Pad.

Q: How should I clean vinyl on my boat?

A: Vinyl surfaces such as seats, pads, sidewalls, rub rails, fenders, etc. are constantly exposed to the elements. If they are not properly cared for, they can deteriorate and become unattractive.

Remove dirt, mildew and grime with Presta's Vinyl & Plastic Cleaner (#166232). Our powerful mix of detergents penetrate deep into the pores to remove deeply embedded soils for a clean, shiny, film-free surface.

Vinyl also needs protection from the elements such as UV rays. Apply Vinyl and Plastic Conditioner (#166422) to keep your surfaces from fading and cracking.

Q: Why should I use a marine wax?

A: You need to protect your boat from environmental contaminants. Presta's Marine Products are specially formulated for gel coat, fiberglass and marine painted finishes. Advanced technology polishing agents and waxes combine with aminofunctional silicones, dual functional UV absorbers, silicone resin and polymers to create an unbeatable gloss and exceptional protection against environmental contaminants.

Presta's UV Creme Wax (#166116) provides exceptional protection against salt, corrosion, and UV rays in an easy-on/easy-off formula.

For a quick detail in-between waxes, use Presta's Express Detail (#166622) which leaves an attractive, protective shine on any non-porous and painted surface.

Q: How do I maintain the shiny, bright appearance of metal and aluminum?

A: The metal surfaces on your boat are extremely important. Rusting and corrosion not only destroy the appearance, but also stain surrounding surfaces.

To clean and brighten all metals including chrome, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, copper and magnesium, use Presta's Metal Polish (#166516). It also provides a light layer of protection from corrosion.

Conquering Swirl Marks
Many different things such as dirty tools, dirt on the paint and improper buffing techniques can cause swirl marks.

The most important step in swirl mark prevention is a proper wash. This will remove any dirt that can get caught under the buffing pad and scratch your vehicle. We recommend using a clean, soft fiber Wash Mitt (#810008) every time you wash.

Next, remove any environmental contaminants with an Overspray Clay (Heavy cut Bar #8130710 or Light Cut Bar #8130708). Make sure you moisten your vehicles surface with Spray N Shine (#1309)while using Overspray Clays. Removing contaminants prior to buffing means less dirt to contaminate your buffing pads. It will also help you use less polish and energy if you remove the contaminants before you start.

And last, you want to make sure your backing plate is working properly. If you see any signs of damage, such as dented edges or it is bent, then you should replace it. A bad backing plate will cause vibrations while buffing and cause swirl marks.

Now let's get rid of those swirls. Presta's Swirl Remover (#1336) is designed to remove swirls from both fresh and cured paint surfaces while leaving a high-gloss finish that does not wash away. It contains no fillers, waxes or silicones.

For best results use Swirl Remover and a Presta blue foam polishing pad (#890145). Apply a 1” (25 mm) dab of Swirl Remover to a 2’x 2’ (.6 m x .6 m) section and spread with the polish pad. Buff at slower speeds (1000 - 1400 rpm). Buffing at slower speeds will give you a better finish. Buff until the product is mostly gone. Then wipe the surface with a Presta Micro Fiber Cloth (#800135).

Understanding Your Buffing Pads
As a refresher on terminology, let's review the CCS technology that we incorporate in our foam pads and the benefits in performance. CCS stands for "Collapsed Cell Structure" and is the modification that is made to the buffing surface of the pad. The strategic pattern of closed cell dimples or pockets in the surface of the pad prevent polishes and compounds from absorbing into the pad. Without the CCS design, polishing products can be absorbed too quickly, trapping the product below the working surface of the pad.

The benefits of this CCS technology include:
  1. Slower rate of polish absorption. Less product is absorbed into the foam offering longer working time for better polishing results.

  2. Improved control. The pockets act as little reservoirs and slowly release the polish for even pad coverage and precise control.

  3. Prevents pad skipping. CCS pockets reduce surface tension and virtually eliminate the sticking and skipping that often occurs with flat/smooth surface pads.

  4. Reduces heat build-up. The pockets reduce the amount of friction against the flat paint surface and can significantly reduce heat build-up.
Presta offers five performance levels of CCS foam pads: Orange Foam Heavy Cut Pad (#890135), Yellow Foam Medium Cut Pad (#890136), Green Foam Light Cut Pad (#890137), Blue Foam Soft Polish Pad (#890138), and White Foam Super Soft Polish Pad (#890139)

Presta offers four performance levels of non-CCS foam pads: Yellow Flat Foam Medium Cut Pad (#890154), Green Flat Foam Light Cut Pad (#890156), Blue Flat Foam Soft Polish Pad (#890145), and White Flat Foam Super Soft Polish Pad (#890155)

Personal preference will dictate which pad surface configuration best fits your buffing style, either CCS or non-CCS.

Protect Your Buffing Pads!

If the pad is new or dry, dampen the pad by misting it with Spray 'N Shine (#1309). This will aid in the dispersion of the compound or polish. Continue misting throughout the task.

If the pad becomes dry or caked with compound or polish, brush the pad with Presta's Foam Conditioning Brush (#890080). Certain brushes may tear the pad or leaves bristles behind that can damage the surface you're buffing.

You can wash your pads in our Buffing Pad Washer (#810057P).

Do not place in a dryer. This will shorten the life of the pad. Air drying is the best.

Foam pads do wear out. You should replace your pads at the first signs of wearing or tearing.

Keeping your Convertible Top Looking and Performing Great!Do you think cleaning your convertible top is too hard and too time consuming? Regular maintenance on your vinyl or fabric convertible top will prolong its beauty and performance, but it doesn’t have to be a chore. You’ll find that having a convertible is just as fun - even more so - when you find the right convertible top cleaner and protectant. You can achieve proper top care in just a few easy steps.

You should provide regular maintenance for you convertible top every 6 to 8 weeks depending on weather and environmental elements. Remember to never use household cleaning products to clean your top. Many household cleaners contain detergents and harsh acids that will quickly deteriorate fabric or vinyl. Only use products made specifically for the automotive surfaces you are cleaning. Also, anytime you are cleaning your convertible top make sure it is out of direct sunlight.

If your top just needs a quick cleaning, wash with Presta's Sudzz Car Wash. Gently scrub your convertible top with a soft bristled brush or a wash mitt. Rinse thoroughly. Dry with a lint-free cloth.

If your top is dirty, you should use a cleaner to break up the grease and films that can plague your top. Presta’s Leather and Vinyl Cleaner can be used on both vinyl and fabric tops and does not contain any detergents or harsh acids that may harm your convertible top. Before you start cleaning, make sure your vehicle is completely dry. Always check colorfastness in an inconspicuous area. Spray directly onto surface. If your top is heavily soiled, clean the entire top at one time to avoid rings or spots. Scrub surface with a damp cloth or soft bristled brush for heavy soils. Rinse completely with water then dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.

Remember to apply Presta's Leather Conditioner to your vinyl top to protect it from drying, fading and cracking. After you have cleaned the surface, apply directly onto vinyl convertible top and wipe with a soft cloth immediately. After coverage has been achieved, wipe off any excess lotion especially around the trim. Over application can cause the excess material to run onto your paint the next time it rains or you wash your vehicle. Leather Conditioner is not recommended for use on fabric convertible tops.

Quality Paint Jobs Start with Proper Surface Preparation
Presta’s Scuff Stuff Cleaner and Surface Preparation (#1317) contains water-soluble cleaners that strip away waxes, sealers, road film and dirt while super fine abrasives create a consistent surface profile. This profiling helps coatings spread flatter and bond more securely to the treated surface. Scuff Stuff is meant for prepare blend and on hard-to-reach areas, such as around door locks and under seals and door jambs. It is ideal for cleaning and abrading urethane bumpers. It also rinses off easily and completely without water.

After using Scuff Stuff, use Presta's Pre-paint Cleaner (#1382) to remove oil, grease, wax silicone, sanding residue and other surface contaminants from bare metal, primer and plastic. This VOC compliant, water-based cleaner/degreaser contains a unique blend of detergents and solvents that quickly and efficiently prepaper surfaces for painting. Pre-Paint Cleaner greatly reduces static build-up, which helps check dirt nibs and minimizes the need to wet sand and buff.

Summer Road Trip Cleanup Tips Whether it’s a day trip or a cross-country voyage, spring and summer road trips make a mess of your car, truck or RV. Here are a few hints how to clean up after and protect your vehicle on your next trip.

Bug Splats

One of the biggest challenges is dealing with bug splats on the front of your vehicle. To loosen bug splats and make them easier to remove, we recommend spraying surfaces down with Conquest Heavy-Duty Cleaner.

Washing

Never wash your vehicle with ordinary dish soap. Dish soap contains surfactants that strip away everything on your vehicle’s surface (including any waxes and sealers) leaving your surface dry and unprotected from sunlight and oxidation. The surfactants can also strip away any protection on bare metal parts of your vehicle, such as engine compartments or areas inside the doors. This can promote rusting in those areas as well as any chipped spots on the paint. Dish soap will also not rinse as well as car wash soaps which can be a huge waste of time and leave a smeared finish. Always use a car wash soap like Presta Nano Wash And Wax. Nano Wash and Wax even adds a little wax to the surface as you wash for some additional protection.

Headlights

Road grit, dirt and sand can break down the protective coating on your headlight lenses, causing them to dull and yellow. This etched surface makes it more difficult for light to escape, and can dramatically reduce the amount of light available for nighttime driving. Presta’s Headlight Restoration Kit lets you restore your lights to like-new clarity in just a few steps… Click here to see how it works.

Hot Rod visionary, Barry Penfound, trusts Presta to finish and detail his creations

At Penfound Design, the philosophy underlying every build is “Dream… Display… Drive.” Owner, designer and collector, Barry Penfound, has a passion for cars and an eye for style that has earned his projects national attention from all of the most respected shows and publications including Goodguys, NSRA, Hot Rod Magazine, Rod & Custom and a whole lot more.

For Barry, every concept starts as a dream. Then, Barry typically enlists the help of a skilled artist to create a rendering of the concept. Next, Barry uses the finished rendering to generate some excitement and interest in the build. Finally, after enlisting the help of his network of shops and suppliers the build begins.

Penfound Design’s style blends modern elements with classic styling. Always careful not to deviate too far from the vehicle’s original looks, some of his modifications are so subtle that it takes a very trained eye to even notice them. Others, like 20-inch rims and air suspension, make his cars not only appeal to hot rod enthusiasts, but low-rider and modern builders as well.

With four projects under his belt, and at least four more builds in the works, Barry is well on his way to making Penfound Design one of the premier custom car shops in the country.

Barry’s body shop partners use the Presta Ultra Buffing System Shop Pak to finish the painted cars, and Barry trusts Presta detailing products to keep his cars ready for judging at the shows he attends.

A lifelong passion for cars fuels Tony Goodrich’s pursuit of perfection

Tony is not shy about showing you his binder full of impressive photos of his past builds for clients throughout the Midwest. But, perhaps the most impressive photo is the one shown above… especially when Tony asks you to “guess what it is?”

While this low-res digital reproduction doesn’t really do the photo justice, it is actually a picture of the door panel of a ’55 Chevy Tony had just finished buffing. Not only can you make out a perfect reflection of the photographer in the foreground, the gloss is so deep that you can see with incredible clarity the trees, house and horizon in the distant background.

As owner of Tony’s Rod and Custom in Dorsey, IL, Tony Goodrich has earned a reputation as a master builder and painter. For over 11 years Tony’s Rod and Custom has been turning out one or two full-blown show cars per year, plus slews of custom flame and ghost-flame paint jobs.

As is the case with many car lovers, Tony’s passion for vehicles started at an early age. Growing up, Tony’s dad collected and restored old Mercedes and Ferrari racecars. Even during his youth, Tony showed a talent for seeing cars through a custom lens. In fact, some of his early drawings and renderings were printed in Mercedes Benz Star magazine.

These days, Tony focuses more on custom hot rods. Some of his more recent builds have been selected as “Pro Picks” at Goodguys shows and were featured on the Discovery channel series American Hot Rod.

Tony made the switch to Presta for his paint finishing a few years ago and hasn’t looked back. To achieve the mirror-like perfection he demands of his finishes, Tony uses a three step buffing process: First, he uses Ultra Cutting Crème with a black wool cutting pad to remove wet-sand scratches and start bringing up the gloss. Next, he uses Ultra Polish and a green wool pad to add depth to the gloss and remove any compounding marks left behind from the more aggressive Ultra Cutting Crème. Finally, he takes out any swirls and adds that final “pop” using a combination of Presta Swirl Remover and a blue foam buffing pad.

Once the finish passes Tony’s intense scrutiny, he protects it with a coat of Presta Fast Wax. And, in between waxes, Tony likes Presta Spray ‘n Shine to quickly wipe away loose dust and fingerprints.

Presta UV Creme Wax – Easy On / Easy OffMade my annual trek to my local jobber store for boat polish/wax.

I have been using Presta Ultra Polish for many years. This year the jobber salesman recommended I try Presta UV Creme Wax versus two of the leading brands which I have also used for years.

After Ultra Polish with a green wool pad, I waxed with Presta UV Creme Wax. Boat looks Great!!!!! Easy on and easy off. Waxed sides of High Heel (41’) in hour and half (took 4 hours to polish). Went back and bought more and told everyone at the store to highly recommend it.

Great products!

At Ranger Boats classic cars and hot rods are a passion too

Presta Products and Ranger Boats have a long-standing relationship of mutual respect and admiration. For anyone not familiar with Ranger, they are among the most highly regarded names in the bass boat market.

In addition to boats, many of the guys at Ranger are also into hot rods and classic cars. Among the most passionate car enthusiasts are long-time Ranger Boat employees (and brothers) Randy and Greg Hopper. Both Greg and Randy started at Ranger more than 36-years ago and have worked in just about every area from plant and maintenance to painters. Today, Greg serves as the Quality Manager, while his brother Randy is the President of Ranger Boats.

This '26 model T touring car was completed for Greg's father-in-law

Greg and Randy’s passion for cars started at a young age. During the 60s and 70s, the brothers spent time working on hot rods, racing in the area’s dirt track circuit and working in the local garage. While building and tuning engines is his true passion, Greg’s time spent spraying boats at Ranger increased his passion for painting hot rods as well. Among his favorite projects was his 55 Chevy Bellaire. Greg and his brother did nearly 90% of the work on this blue and white beauty themselves in their amazing custom garage. Greg eventually sold the 55 Bellaire to help pay for his kids’ college tuition, however that didn’t stop the team from diving right back into other projects and even starting their own custom, hot rod garage call Hoprods.

A work in progress, this is the frame for the '54 pickup

Among Hoprods latest undertakings are a 54 Chevy Resto Rod Pickup and a 32 Ford Roadster. The 54 Pickup is in mid-build, and although he and his brother can’t agree whether to paint it silver or red, it’s sure to look great either way.

The '32 Ford Roadster is nearing completion

Both on cars and on boats, Greg trusts Presta Products. Some of Greg’s favorites include Spray ‘n Shine to quick detail and ward off dust and fingerprints and Fast Wax to provide an easy-on-easy-off wax to his hot rods. In addition to their fleet of show cars, Greg and the rest of the guys at Ranger trust Presta Products to prep and polish each boat prior to delivery using Presta compounds. Plus, they provide all customers with a boat care kit that includes a selection of special Presta waxes and cleaners.

This is the cab for the '54 pickup – NOTE: Presta Banner in the background!

Oh yeah, Greg and Randy have a bit of a thing for Corvettes too

Fast gloss, no sling, easy clean-up
Buffed with a yellow wool pad, the finish came to an outstanding gloss very quickly with no sling. Very impressive.

The compounds that I used to use would dry up and leave a white powder in the jambs and all over the shop floor – causing us to have to clean up the whole car and the shop. But with Presta, I just washed the car and that was it. As for the floor, there was no sling to clean-up. Next time our shop orders product we’ll be switching to all Presta.

Thanks,
Jeff P.

Avoid Adding Swirls When You Wash Your Car

One of the biggest causes of minor scratches and swirls in your car’s paint is improper washing technique. Here are a few tips to make sure that you’re not adding swirls to your paint when you wash.

Keep in mind anything that is even mildly abrasive will add micro scratches and swirls to your paint. This includes dirt nibs trapped in your wash mitt and coarse or abrasive drying towels (never use household towels – they’re much too coarse).

First, you’ll need the proper supplies. Here’s a quick checklist before you get started:

• A good all-purpose cleaner/degreaser like Presta Tire & Wheel Cleaner.
• Two buckets – one for soap and one for rinsing.
• A quality car soap or wash and wax.
• A wash mitt.
• A high-quality chamois for drying.
• A speed detailer spray like Presta Spray 'n Shine.
• Clean microfiber towels.

Before you begin, thoroughly rinse and inspect your buckets and wash mitt to make sure they are free of all dirt and debris. Next, fill your wash buckets – one with clean water for rinsing and one with your soap mixture. Be sure to follow the dilution ratios on the soap. Wash and wax products typically require more product, while concentrated car soaps typically require very little. Always mix your car soap as directed.

Move the vehicle out of the sun, and make sure the surface is cool to the touch. Next, thoroughly rinse the entire vehicle surface to get rid of as much of the loose dirt and soil as possible before you begin washing. Then, pre-treat any heavily soiled areas like wheels, wheel wells, rocker panels as well as any spots such as bird droppings, bug splats or tree sap with Presta Tire & Wheel Cleaner to loosen soils prior to washing. Let the product dwell as directed and rinse.

Now, you’re ready to start washing. Begin with your vehicle’s horizontal surfaces cleaning in straight lines. Start off using a left to right motion and finish using front to back (this will help loosen dirt from multiple directions). Work in small sections (no bigger then 3 square feet) and apply very little pressure to your wash mitt. Rinse out your wash mitt often using your rinse bucket – never dunk your dirty mitt back into the soap. Also, be sure to rinse the vehicle often making sure that you do not allow the soap to dry on the surface.

Next, move on to the vertical surfaces working from the top down. Note, if you come across heavily soiled areas, avoid the urge to apply more pressure. Never “scrub” the surface with your wash mitt. The harder you press the more likely you are to damage your vehicle’s paint. Re-treat stubborn areas with your all-purpose cleaner. For the final rinse, use a heavy spray. Or, better yet, remove the nozzle entirely and let the water sheet off of the surface. This will create less water spots and speed your drying and touchup time.

Next, unroll and inspect your chamois to be sure that it’s free of dirt. Wet the chamois using clean water and ring out any excess moisture. If you like, you can even use a little spray detailer to add some additional lubrication. Keep the chamois as flat as possible and use broad, sweeping strokes to pull away as much water as possible.

Finally, use a clean microfiber towel to dry tight, hard-to-reach areas. Remember to remove the tag from your microfiber towels as they can also add scratches into your paint. Finish up with your spray detailer and an additional microfiber to clean up any unwanted streaks or waterspots that might occur as water drips out of seams and body moldings.

That’s it. You’re done! Follow these careful steps every time you wash, you’ll avoid much of what causes ugly swirls and micro scratches.

Mid-Ohio Driving School – Add it to Your Bucket List!In early September, our friends at Mid-Ohio invited several members of the Presta Products team to the track to attend their daylong performance driving school. This program is just one of the many courses offered at Mid-Ohio. Other classes include teen defensive driving, motorcycle, fleet and a more extensive three-day high-performance driving workshop with more detailed drills and extended track time.

If you are a car or race enthusiast of any level, a visit to the Mid-Ohio School is a “must-do” for your bucket list. The day begins with a timed test of your “uneducated” skills through a coned-off road course. This time will later be used as your benchmark to see how your skills have improved when you’re tested again on the same course at the end of the day.

Next, there is a short classroom session to go over some performance driving basics including braking, hard cornering and vehicle control. These sessions are taught by Mid-Ohio’s team of veteran drivers that are experts at how to handle a vehicle.

After the short class session, it’s back out to your personal 2010 Acura TSX that you’re assigned for the day for some cornering and braking drills. This is followed by some more road course work to give you time to practice what you’ve learned in the braking and cornering drills, and to help you shave valuable seconds off of your time trial from earlier in the day.

Next it’s off to Mid-Ohio’s Honda Civic Skid Car for some more drills. By creating a very small area of rubber to road contact, this specially-designed car simulates the over steer and under steer conditions that a driver might experience – but does so at safe, slow speeds in a controlled setting.

Finally, the class is broken into several teams and taken out on to the main 2.4 mile track for some white-knuckle lead/follow laps on one of the nations’ top road courses. Then, to cap off an amazing day, it’s back to the road course that you started on for another timed run to give you an opportunity to show off your new skills.

For more information on attending the Mid-Ohio School, visit their website at www.MidOhio.com.

Get rid of stains left by falling autumn leaves

Autumn leaves can leave ugly stains on vehicle paint. To avoid stains, always pick leaves off immediately. Avoid brushing them off as you may scratch the surface. However, if you’re too late, and the paint does get stained, it’s not the end of the world. After washing the surface, we recommend using Presta Conquest Heavy-Duty Cleaner at a dilution of 1:10 to remove any spots and stains left behind after ordinary washing.

Step 1: Spray the area thoroughly using Presta Conquest at a dilution ratio of one part Conquest to ten parts water.

Step 2: Allow the solution to dwell for several minutes. Then, wipe the surface dry with a clean microfiber towel. Repeat if necessary – be careful not to apply too much pressure as you may end up adding scratches and swirls into the surface.

Step 3: Once the surface is clean, add Presta Fast Wax to protect the clean finish and prevent future stains and contamination.

TIps for garaging your car for the winter

For those of us who live in harsh winter climates, the snow, ice and road salt that we have to deal with forces many of us to garage our babies for the winter. But, there’s more to proper vehicle storage than simply parking it and forgetting it. By following a few simple tips, you can ensure your ride will emerge fully preserved in the spring.

Clean it up before you put your car away:

This one’s obvious. Any dirt you leave on your car will be even tougher to remove if you let it sit for months and months. Do the work ahead of time, and perform a thorough top-to-bottom detailing. Start with a good wash and follow that up with a healthy coat of wax. Use metal polish to shine up and protect any chrome or stainless trim. Degrease engine compartments and doorjambs and clean the wheels and tires. Finally, don’t forget to dress and protect interior surfaces and condition leather seats (if applicable).

Perform any routine maintenance and top off the gas:

Don’t put off that brake job until spring. You’ll just be pissed off when you waste a beautiful spring Saturday doing it later. Plus, it’s a good idea to go ahead and change the oil and top off all of your other fluid – including the gas. Doing so leaves less room for air, which makes it less likely that moisture will accumulate in the tank.

Find a clean, dry place:

Generally speaking, the dryer the location you can find, the better. Try to find a garage with a full concrete floor (rather than dirt or gravel). Reason being, concrete is much better at blocking out moisture. Next, clear away as much of the clutter as possible. Mice and other varmint are attracted to relatively warm and unoccupied spaces (like garages), and they love hiding behind and building nests out of your junk. And, trust me, you don’t want these guys around your car. When they get bored they do nasty things like chew through wires, use your car as their own personal toilet and worst case die and decompose somewhere inside your car where you can’t find them.

Use a quality car cover:

Once you’ve gone though all the steps above, the last thing you need to do is select a vehicle cover. For a relatively dry garage, a simple “over the top” car cover should do the trick. However, if you are concerned that moisture might be an issue, a full cover like the drive-in car capsule (shown below) may be a better alternative.

Strong Finish At Fall Shootout For 14-Year Old TifftHinckley, OH - September 13, 2010 – Up and coming driver Matt Tifft traveled to Marshfield, Wisconsin over the weekend to compete in the Marshfield Fall Shootout at Marshfield Motor Speedway. At the age of just fourteen years old, Matt has been developing under ASA Midwest Tour Series driver Tim Schendel from Sparta, WI. “The kid has a ton of potential and I’m really looking forward to watching him grow in the sport,” said Schendel. “He’s really been doing a good job at learning and understanding these types of cars and learning just how tough super late model racing is in Wisconsin.” Matt has been working with Iron Eagle Racing (Schendel) since May of 2010 and has participated in testing at various tracks in Wisconsin and competed in four events at Marshfield this season.

Racing got under way at Marshfield on Saturday the 11th for the opener of the Fall Shootout. In the Presta Products Impala SS, Matt qualified in the eleventh position, finished third in the heat race and drove to a respectable ninth place finish in the twenty-five lap feature. “I had a lot of fun in the race I just wish the race would have been a bit longer.” Tifft said. “It really took me like ten laps just to get a good feel for the car but we just ran out of time.” It was a great warm up for Sunday’s race which brought in over thirty-three cars that consisted of a lot of top-running drivers from central Wisconsin. Matt qualified in the 31st position and had his work cut out for him. “Qualifying is the toughest part of racing and this is just one thing that we need to work with Matt a bit more on.” commented Schendel.

With the first event of the twin 50 lap features, Tifft started in the last row in the 31st position and finished 17th in just 50 laps and got great experience in heavy traffic. With a short break in between features, just a few minor adjustments were made to the car and Tifft was sent back on his way for the final feature where he contended for a top-five spot early on. “We were really proud of him. He was under a ton of pressure at times in this race and to battle back and forth like he did at his age was pretty impressive” said driver coach Tim Schendel. Through several cautions and even a red flag, Tifft gained some great experience in avoiding wrecks and even working with the changing track conditions, etc. “The car felt awesome most of the race, but after the red flag I started to fall back a bit. I kept on charging and seventh was just the best I could do” said Tifft. Driver of the #89 Presta Products Impala SS, Tifft brought home yet another top- ten finish in his early asphalt racing career. Tifft will continue to work with Tim Schendel/Iron Eagle Racing with more testing and possibly even a few more races yet this season. Until then he plans to keep his studies up at Highland High School!

Tifft is sponsored by Presta Products that carries an entire line of professional car detailing and paint refinishing products. Rid your paint of bonded contaminants with a clay barHave you ever taken a really good look at your car’s paint? Even with regular washing and waxing the surface may begin to lack some of its original shine and mirror-like luster. Often the cause of this can be attributed to bonded contaminants.

Bonded contaminants are airborne particles and droplets including: tree sap, industrial fallout, overspray paint, pollution, road grime and plain old dust and dirt.

Be sure to keep the bag or cellophane around so you can feel how slick and smooth the surface feels after treatment with a clay bar.

How to use your clay bar:
Step 1: Wash and dry the vehicle to remove all loose dirt and dust.

Step 2: Break off a palm-size piece of clay, and kneed it into a flat, pancake shape.

Step 3:
Working in approximately 2’ x 2’ areas, start by misting the area with a detailing spray like Presta Spray ‘n Shine to lubricate. Next, rub the clay bar over the surface several times. To begin, you’ll feel resistance, but it should loosen up after several passes. Work the bar over the entire area until it glides effortless across the surface of the paint. This ensures that you’ve removed all of the debris from the surface of the car.

Step 4:
Dry the treated area and repeat the test above by running your hand or a piece of cellophane over the treated area.

Step 5: Protect your freshly cleaned surface with a coat of wax to help prevent and slow the formation of future contaminants.

Presta offers both light cut and heavy cut overspray clay. For lightly effected areas, use light cut. For heavy accumulations of overspray paint or visible contamination, step up to our heavy-cut overspray clay. Presta clay bars include a plastic case to keep the clay clean and prevent it from over drying when not in use.

Three common detailing myths debunked

When it comes to detailing, there are a million opinions and tons of information available online. A lot of the information is good, but some of it is simply misleading (or just plain wrong)! The following are three common misconceptions that we at Presta would like to clear up.

Myth 1: Washing a car and cleaning a car are the same thing. While regular car washing is important, Car Wash Soaps really only break up and remove loose dirt and contaminants. The trouble is, even the best car wash soaps won’t touch stubborn stains, bonded dirt and oxidation. If you run the back of your hand across the surface of the paint and it feels bumpy or rough, you may consider using a clay bar. Clay bars help break loose and remove bonded on contamination that regular washing cannot. The best part is, clay bars are easy to use and even the most novice of driveway detailers can achieve a clean, smooth as glass surface with just a little elbow grease. Just remember to continually kneed and lubricate your clay!

Myth 2: Waxing alone will remove fine swirls. If only it were that easy. Unfortunately, polishing and waxing are two entirely different processes that serve two entirely different purposes. Wax is simply a layer of protection that sits on top of your paint and prevents dirt and contaminants from becoming bonded to the surface. The misconception comes from the fact that waxes typically contain ingredients that fill fine scratches and swirls, creating the appearance of a smooth and flawless finish. However, as the wax eventually begins to wash away, the scratches and swirls will reappear. Polishing, on the other hand, flattens out scratches and swirls by removing the uneven portions of your clear coat. The result is a flat, flawless finish that will not wash away. For show car quality results, we recommend polishing surfaces to bring up and enhance the gloss and using wax as a top coat to protect and add shine.

Myth 3: Paste wax offers better, longer-lasting protection than liquid waxes. Years ago, this may have been the case, but now, with breakthroughs in ingredients and technology, liquid waxes offer every bit as good of protection as your favorite paste wax. Presta Best Wax, for example, offers 60-90 days of protection. However, keep in mind, how long your wax lasts depends heavily on how much you drive, how often your vehicle is outdoors, and your local climate and environment, so individual results may vary.

3 Timesaving Summer Car Wash and Cleaning Tips

1) Clean and rinse wheels and tires thoroughly before moving on to the paint. This seems silly, but the brake dust from constant stopping and starting of daily driving combined with the fact that your tires are continually kicking up road grime make your wheels and tires among the dirtiest places on your vehicle. We recommend spraying down the tire, rim and wheel well thoroughly with Presta Non-Acid Tire and Wheel Cleaner, and allowing the product to dwell for several minutes. Then, rinse the wheels and tires completely before you spray your vehicle and begin to wash. When your wheels are clean prior to washing, you don’t have to worry about dirt spraying back up on your fenders while you’re washing and rinsing the rest of your vehicle.

2) Loosen bug guts before you begin washing. Bug guts are not only gross, but once they’re baked in by the summer heat and sun, they can be nearly impossible to get off. One way to help loosen bugs before you wash is to coat the front of your vehicle with a light mist of Tire and Wheel Cleaner before you wash and rinse. Our Tire and Wheel is paint safe, so you don’t have to worry about damaging painted areas. The mild detergents in our wheel cleaner help break down dried on bugs, so that later when you hit them with a soapy wash mitt, they slide right off.

3) Get rid of dried bird droppings as quickly as possible. The acid in bird droppings can actually penetrate into your clear coat and leave a nasty etched spot. Therefore, you’ll want to get it off of there as quickly as possible. One, fast and easy way to do it is to fold a microfiber into fours and soak one side with Presta Spray ‘n Shine. Place the cloth on top of the spot and soak the rest of it with water (but not to the point where water is running down the vehicle’s panels). Allow the saturated towel to sit on the spot for 5-10 minutes. Finally, using your palm and fingertips, grab all around the droppings and pinch, gather and lift the spot off of the paint – this will help avoid scratches. Finally, spray and wipe away any remaining residue with Spray ‘n Shine and another clean microfiber.

The truth about removing scratches from your vehicle!

Step 1: How deep is the scratch? Modern paint consists of three layers on top of the sheet metal: Primer, Base Coat (the layer that gives your vehicle it’s color) and Clear Coat. Deep scratches that break through the clear coat and down into the base coat, primer or (worst-case) the bare metal are not coming out with Presta Products (or anyone else’s buffing compounds for that matter). To truly be fixed, scratches like this must be sanded, painted and blended in by a trained, professional body repair technician. Any product that claims it will “remove” scratches this deep are really only filling them with waxes and silicones. After several washes the fillers WILL wash away and the scratches WILL return.

However, if the scratches have remained only to the clear coat layer, there is a good chance that you can get rid of them permanently using Presta Buffing Compounds and Polishes. The typical rule of thumb is that if you drag your thumbnail over the scratch and you can feel it dig in, it may be too deep to remove with traditional compounding. However, compounding and polishing can remove (or at the very least significantly reduce) most surface scratches, scrapes and scuffs.

Step 2: Selecting the right compound. To save yourself a lot of work, we recommend that you always start with the least aggressive compound that will get the job done. The compounding process is mechanically removing small amounts of your vehicle’s clear coat to flatten the surface and remove the scratch. That being said, you’ll want to make sure that you’re removing as little clear coat as possible so that your paint remains glossy and protected.

For light scratches, mild oxidation and contamination we recommend starting with Ultra Polish and our green wool buffing pad, followed by Swirl Remover and a blue foam polishing pad to polish away any swirls left from compounding and really pop the vehicle’s gloss – both can be applied with a rotary or random orbital buffer. If there are areas with more significant scratches and damage, you’ll want to start with a more aggressive compound like our Ultra Cutting Crème using a rotary buffer. Then, follow that up with Ultra Polish and Swirl Remove as mentioned above.

Step 3: Get started: It’s true, buffing out scratches can be very intimidating. But if you’re comfortable using a polisher, and you are familiar with the process, you should be able to achieve outstanding results. See some of our additional buffing resources for more information.

See Better – Drive Better! Track, Trail or Highway, Cleaner Windows Keep You SafeKeeping glass clean, spot and streak-free not only makes your car look better, it helps keep you safe. So, whether you’re racing down the straightaway or simply navigating through rush hour traffic – better visibility = safer driving!

The following tips will help you keep your glass spotless and streak-free.

Tip 1: Clean glass as the last step in your detailing process: Nothing’s worse than getting your glass spotless and clean, only to get wax or dressing on the windows when you’re doing additional steps – save the glass for last!

Tip 2: Avoid glass cleaners with ammonia: Household glass cleaners with ammonia work to cut grease, however, the overspray from these cleaners can have a damaging, drying effect on rubber, vinyl, leather and plastic. Plus, ammonia will RUIN aftermarket window tint. Always choose an Ammonia-Free Glass Cleaner.

Tip 3: Avoid cleaning glass in direct sunlight: The heat of the sun can cause glass cleaners to evaporate too quickly and not achieve their desired cleaning effects. This may result in streaks and make your rag feel as though it’s dragging (rather than gliding) across the surface. If no shade is available simply apply more product as necessary, and you may need to work a little harder to achieve the desired results.

Tip 4: Use the two-rag system: We recommend dampening one microfiber cloth with glass cleaner, wiping down the windows and immediately wiping them dry with a second, dry microfiber towel. This will help eliminate streaks.

Tip 5: Wipe outside glass one direction – inside glass the other: For example, wipe exterior glass using horizontal strokes, and wipe interior glass using vertical strokes. Then, if you do notice streaks when you’re done, you’ll know with a quick glance whether it’s inside or outside of the vehicle.

Advanced Step: If after repeated cleanings you notice that there are some water spots and contaminants that simply won’t go away, you may need to move up to a more aggressive cleaning or polishing. Water spots and road grime can leave windows looking cloudy and hazy. Using a clay bar or a mild polish like Presta Nano Cleaner Wax and a buffer, you can help restore your glass to crystal-clear.

With regular cleaning, you’ll notice that it’s much easier to keep your windows clean, so clean your windows often to achieve the best results!

Set your car apart – attention to detail makes all the difference
Dressing The Vehicle's Plastic Rubber and Vinyl Trim1. Dress all of the rubber, vinyl and plastic trim pieces before waxing or sealing your paint. Not only will this make your trim “pop” and look great – it will help prevent drying, cracking and fading. Plus, dressing trim pieces first makes it much less likely that these surfaces will absorb wax or polish. Therefore, you will spend less time getting any residue off of these areas after you’re through waxing. For this process, we recommend Presta Wipe-On Tire Dressing. This gel, no-mess formula gives you precision control when applied with a wax applicator or microfiber towel.

clean wheel with clean wheel wells2. Apply a light spray of Presta dressing to your inner wheel wells. Everyone loves sparkly clean wheels and shiny black tires, but most people neglect their wheel wells. Most cars have black plastic liners in each of the wheel wells. Simply hitting this with a light coating of Presta Radiant or Presta All-Weather Dressing will make them look clean and detailed and prevent road contaminants from sticking to the surface.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Check PrestaProducts.com regularly for more detailing tips and tricks.

Trust your car to professional detailing products – leave the dish soap under the sink!At Presta, we’re often asked, “what makes professional detailing products better than your average household cleaners?” So, we looked at the four most common household cleaners people use on their vehicles, and have outlined the negative impact they can have on the look and longevity of your car, motorcycle or boat.

Dishwashing Soap/Detergent as a Car Wash: Dishwash soap is designed to remove everything from the surface being cleaned. Unfortunately for your vehicle, that includes stripping away all of the car wax and/or paint sealant from the surface. Repeated use leaves your surface dry and unprotected. In fact, continual car washing using dish soap has been proven to accelerate the oxidation process. Finally, dish soap is often very alkaline, which leaves surfaces with a “non-neutral” charge. This causes new wax that is applied after washing with dish soap to adhere less securely to the vehicle surface – reducing durability, longevity and protection. Professional washes, like our Sudzz Car Wash, leaves surfaces clean without stripping. And, for an added bit of protection, Presta Nano Wash and Wax actually cleans and adds a layer of protection in one, easy step.

Household “Blue” Glass Cleaners to Clean Car Windows: Most household glass cleaners contain large amounts of ammonia. While ammonia can be a powerful cleaner for cutting through the grease and grime that builds up on windows, it can also be very damaging to other vehicle surfaces like leather, vinyl and rubber. Plus, ammonia has been known to ruin aftermarket window tint. Last, but certainly not least, breathing in ammonia fumes not only smells terrible, it’s also very damaging to your health. For these reasons, all Presta glass cleaners use an ammonia-free formula with different blends of cleaners and polymers to power away grease, grime and oil without damaging window tint or other vehicle surfaces. Read more about Presta Glass Cleaners.

“Green” General Purpose Cleaners/Degreasers as Tire and Wheel Cleaner: “Green” all-purpose cleaners are more or less intended for shop use: cleaning floors, brushes, parts washers, etc. Do you really want to trust your expensive wheels and tires to the same cleaner people scrub floors with? We don’t recommend it. In fact, some of these all-purpose cleaners are extremely corrosive and may react with bare aluminum and other types of wheels. Presta Tire and Wheel Cleaner is a fast-acting, non-acid based cleaner that powers away break dust and grime from both the wheel and tire. Best of all, it’s completely safe on any type of rim when used as directed.

Those Oily Spray-On Dressing or Disposable Wipe-On Dressings for Treating Dash Boards and Seats: While products like these have been around for years, most professional detailers and car enthusiasts will tell you to shy away from them. While they initially add a very glossy shine, the problem is that these products are very oily, which actually attracts more dust and dirt. Furthermore, as they evaporate, they can leave a filmy residue all over your interior window. Plus, while they are very convenient, the disposable wipes simply dry out over time, so you typically end up wasting every other wipe. That is why we recommend trying Presta Leather and Vinyl Cleaner or Presta Clean and Shine. Both provide powerful, deep-down cleaning without the oily residue, but Clean and Shine also adds a smooth, satiny gloss for those who like a little more shine.

Scuff Stuff works in hard-to-reach areasScuff Stuff to strip away waxes, sealers, road film and dirt. Its super fine abrasives help create a consistent profile so that coatings spread flatter and make paint bonds more securely to the treated surface. Scuff Stuff works great to prepare blend and hard-to-reach areas, such as around door jambs. It is ideal for cleaning and abrading urethane bumpers. Scuff Stuff rinses off easily and completely with water.

Don’t panic – Overspray removal made easy
Believe it or not, getting overspray on your vehicle’s paint is not the end of the world… With the right techniques, a little time and some elbow grease, you should be able to avoid costly refinishing.

The first thing you’ll want to do is take a deep breath and carefully assess the situation. The more facts that you have (or can obtain) the better off you’ll be. Whether it’s your car or your customer’s car, you’ll want to ask questions like:

What type of paint was used? Was it water based or solvent based? Water-based paint may come off with a simple solvent-based cleaner. However, oil-based paint may react with some solvents causing unwanted results.

How long ago did the overspray occur? Fresh overspray will be much easier to remove than older paint that’s had time to dry and get baked into the surface.

What type of paint is on the car? Is it single stage or base coat/clear coat? You’ll want to use extreme caution on single-stage paint. Using an aggressive solvent, or buffing with too aggressive of a compound may cause serious paint damage. More modern base coat/clear coat finishes are much more forgiving, but should still be handled with extreme care.

NOTE: If at any point you doubt or are unsure of your ability to remove the overspray, take the car to a professional body shop. They will know the best and safest way to remove the paint.

If you do decide to proceed, you’ll want to choose the alternative that involves the least amount of work. Not only will this save time, but you also don’t want to unnecessarily remove clear coat from the vehicle’s finish. Therefore, we recommend that you start by trying to remove the unwanted paint with Presta Overspray Clay.

Overspray Clay glides across the clear and attracts and lifts away the overspray paint. The best technique is to flatten the clay into a pad and rub it firmly across the vehicle’s surface in straight lines (avoid rubbing in circles as this can lead to swirl marks). Also, be sure to keep the surface lubricated with some sort of non-petroleum based soap or cleaner. We recommend using Presta Spray ‘n Shine.

If you find that the overspray is just too tough for the clay, you’ll need to break out your buffer and some Presta compounds. Start with the least aggressive compound you can to get the job done. For example, if the overspray is fresh, you may be able to get away with Ultra Polish followed by some Presta Swirl Remover. If the overspray is extreme, you may need to wet sand in some areas using 1200 grit or finer sand paper. Then, follow that up with Presta Ultra Cutting Crème. Finally, to remove any swirls left behind by aggressive compounding, use Chroma Polish and Swirl Remover (if necessary).

Reduce static buildup for a flat, flawless paint finishIt's no secret that dust and static can ruin a great paint job. While the surface may look clean and dust-free when you start, as soon as the paint starts flying, dust and debris are drawn towards the surface because of the metal's natural static change (think of the way your clothes cling to your body if you didn't use static guard or a dryer sheet). Your only hope for repairing these flaws is to wet sand or buff the areas flat in the next step.

The problem often gets worse in the winter months, as there is dramatically less humidity in the air. Add to that a shop heater or space heater that further dries out the air, and you're just asking for trouble.

Presta Pre-Paint Cleaner helps reduce these nasty problems and can actually help save you a step down the road. We recommend starting with our best selling Scuff Stuff Surface Prep. Unlike simple sanding, Scuff Stuff strips away wax, sealers, road film and creates a consistent and even scratch profile. Plus, Scuff Stuff washes away much cleaner - leaving less debris lying around to begin with.

Next, follow it up with Pre-Paint Cleaner. Pre-Paint Cleaner uses a blend of detergents and degreases to rid the surface of any oil, grease, wax, sanding residue or other nasty stuff that can ruin a great paint job. Plus, it's formulated to reduce static build up and help to repel some of the airborne dust and debris.

How to buff a black car for maximum gloss and shine!black_corvette

Buffing black cars can be really challenging. The following guide will walk you through the process to help you achieve the best possible results. Plus, if you can do a good job on black cars, you should be able to add a beautiful, high-gloss shine to other colors as well.

Black is not really any different than other colors, it just tends to amplify even the tiniest imperfections. That makes it tough to get a mirror-like finish, free of scratches and swirls. But, if you follow the tips in this article, you can achieve outstanding results and get a flat, flawless, high-gloss finish.

Buffing tips and tricks: While there are thousands of ways to buff, we recommend following these simple guidelines to ensure the best possible results. Here are a few of our favorite tips and tricks:

  • Technique: Always keep the buffer as flat as possible. Move the buffer front to back and side to side in a crisscross pattern overlapping about 50% with each pass. Keep the buffer moving, don't let it sit too long in one place. Following these simple techniques will maximize effectiveness while minimizing swirls.
  • Buffer Speed: For cutting and compounding with wool pads, set your buffer at about 1800-2000 rmp. For polishing with a foam pad, set your buffer to about 1000-1400 rpm.
  • Keep Your Buffing Pad Clean: Use a buffing spur or conditioning brush to regularly remove excess compound, dirt and debris from your pads. Consider purchasing a buffing pad washer to clean and recondition pads. And, be sure to replace pads often – do NOT overuse pads. It's just not worth it.
  • Keep Pads Moist: This is especially important for polishing with a foam pad. Foam tends to dry out quickly, and keeping your pad and compound moist minimizes the risk of dry compound and dust adding swirls back into your paint. We recommend using Presta Spray 'n Shine to keep the pad moist and bring out the gloss.
  • Buffing Hoods: The one place that you'll notice remaining swirls the most is looking out over the hood from the driver's seat. To minimize this effect, we recommend your finishing polish passes go in smooth strokes from the windshield to the grille. If any swirls and lines are left over, they'll be far less noticeable than if they're running left-to-right from fender to fender.

Getting Started:

paint_damageAssess the condition of the paint: This is especially important if you're buffing a customer's car. Knowing what can realistically be accomplished through chemical reconditioning and setting the customer's expectations are important first steps. Plus, whether you're buffing your own car, or a customer's car, you're going to want to start with the least aggressive compound that will get the job done. This is because 1) you will remove less clear coat and 2) you will save time removing scratches left behind by aggressive compounding.

Select the appropriate compound and buffing pad: For heavy damage, you'll want to do a three-step process. We recommend starting with Presta Ultra Cutting Creme and a black wool heavy-cut buffing pad. This combination will remove heavy to medium scratches, oxidation, waterspots and acid rain damage. It will even remove up to 1200-grit wet sand scratches.

For step two, we recommend Presta Ultra Polish and a green wool medium-cut buffing pad. This combination removes any left over imperfections and polishes away scratches and swirl marks left behind from the more aggressive compounding done with Ultra Cutting Creme.

Finally, for step three, we recommend Presta Swirl Remover and a blue foam polishing pad. This combination flattens out the clear and leaves a smooth finish free of scratches and swirl marks.

For less severe damage, you may want to do a two-step process. We recommend starting with Presta Ultra Cutting Creme Light to clean up scratches and defects, and skipping right to Presta Swirl Remover to flatten and take out any left over swirls.

Protect Your New Finish: Now that you've gone through all of this work you're going to want your new finish to last. For your final step, we recommend adding a coat of Presta Fast Wax to keep the finish protected. Apply the wax in straight horizontal and vertical strokes – DO NOT USE A CIRCULAR MOTION. Forget what you learned from the Karate Kid, you've just spent a considerable amount making sure that your finish was swirl free. Don't add swirls back in when applying your wax!

Presta at Daytona – a quick recap of the eventThe debut of the Presta #99 car at Daytona was, unfortunately, very brief. The driver, Josh Richards, was caught up in an unavoidable 12-car crash in the first ten laps of the race...

Although the race did not go as everyone had hoped, it was one hell of an experience. Here's a quick look at the events of that weekend.
